The starter relay is tender, it will not stand all the  crap we run on it without a relay on each one, or one relay triggering the other relays..

I originally ran a set of Corbin 50 watt lights on mine w/o a relay, bad decision on my part.  Key on, they were always on, was too much draw on the starter circuit.     I replaced mine with that kit in about June of 97 or 98,   Bike wasn't very old, but had a ton of miles on MGM.   Made the conversion and over 150K additional miles, NO more melting.   All my add ons are in the starter circuit via relays, with one relay firing all the others after the starter button is released.   My son wired it in when I was in the hospital recovering from a Dirt Bike Get off.

it'll save some work if you simply unscrew the start button from the new unit and switch it with the old start button. Unless you have time, that is, to install the entire right-side handle control housing. Here's the way things go back together in case you forget.

You already know in order to buy a new Red Connector and here you would have to buy the entire wiring harness to which it's attached. Nobody on the planet sells it piece meal. It's nice because it also covers the fuse on the starter relay and locks onto the green half. If you don't have much experience removing female terminals from P-connectors, there's a locking barb on the female connector that you have to depress by sticking something skinny into the mating end of the P-connector. Just make sure to bend the barb on the female terminal back the way it was before you insert the female terminal in the replacement connector unit, the one that replaces the damaged red connector.

There is also a link to many substiture parts on the Valk at JeffK's web site.

Here it is, suggest ya save it for future use.   It is very helpful even to us old timers, and on certain items you can save a bundle of $$$$ for the same part that Honda sells ya.    LOL........

I've been using the male half of a 'mini relay' in place of the Red Factory Connector. It doesn't cover the fuse on the top of the starter relay (just the 4 prongs) and there isn't the two clips that the red connector has to secure it in place. However, the locking tab on the mini relay holds it to a certain degree onto the starter relay. One caveat is that the 4 openings where the metal female terminals plug into the mini relay isn't spaced as wide apart as the factory version, so the fit is a smidgen tight. However that's what you want. The disadvantage is that you have to double-check if the female metal terminals are seated the full depth on the prongs. The friction of the tight fit causes the female terminals to hang up as you plug the unit into the recess in the green mating half.
