Another good open source anti virus is AVG.

You should check with you internet service provider, many of them provide free anti-virus software. Mine provides CA Security center which weoks well and is highly rated...

Exactly..... your ISP should have something available.    If she is of college age and attending, they might also have something available.

AVG used to be very good but now it is so bloated and slows your PC down. Go with Avast much lighter footprint, works well and updates regularly.

I've got a mac but have just spent the last day and a half cleansing my sons laptop of viruses and malware and I've installed the free version of AdAware which was the highest rated free version for PCs.  Looks pretty good so far. Good luck.  Steve

Microsoft Security Essentials

+1

This is what I run on all my computers and install on the ones I work on as well.  Works well and is very unobtrusive.

AVAST deletes files without asking and is known for it's high number of false positives. First time you loose a valuable file you'll cuss it like a mofo.

I dont think that is quite right,
it doesnt delete anything, i will put a downloaded file in the quarantine folder if it thinks its a problem file. but i have never had it delete anything with out first asking me a few times,,
if its an email download, i have mine set to ask before deletion,,

As a Computer Tech. I always recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, small footprint, works well, Free, and I've never had a problem with it.  ALL of the others listed above I have tried and had issues of one type or another.  Security Essentials just works and stays out of your way.  'nuff said. Cool

Can MS Security Essentials be used along with Norton Security Suite without much conflict?

Never use two anti-virus programs as they tend to fight over things and slow down your PC. Anti-virus and anti-spyware together are OK, as they do different things. I did support for HP and Dell for years...
