You may be from Pineville if ...

My kid sister shared with me this Valentine’s Day newspaper advertisement, which she carries in her purse for easy laughs.

The ad is from the Alexandria Daily Shadow-of-Its-Former Self Town Talk, the fistful of newsprint that is all that remains of our beloved hometown newspaper.

Alfred Forest placed the ad for his business, Big Al’s Guns, 637 Main, Pineville, Lousyana, which operates in what once was the movie theater in Pineville, which is next to what once was the Robertson’s Dairy Queen (on Sundays, 10 percent of your purchase price goes to the church), and only a little farther down, set back to the west of Main Street, you have the Huey P. Long Medical Center, which is a really long stone’s throw across the Red River from the elegant Hotel Bentley, where Huey’s brother,Gov. Earl Long, holed up as he descended into insanity.

Two buildings up Main Street the other direction from Big Al’s is Paul’s Barber Shop, Paul being the founder’s last name and one of the barbers who regularly lowered my jug ears.

Mandy Davis Langley, who was born the year I graduated from high school and killed her first deer - a five-point buck - when she was 11, says the ad was a hit.

So, the next time you need to buy that special gift for that special mother or wife in your life, recall Al’s Adage:

"Nothing says U Dig’er

Like something with a trigger."

SLIGHTLY off topic, but you gave me enough of an opening, and being a proud daddy, I gotta show her off...

My 6 year old daughter shooting HER rifle:

(And before anyone jumps down my throat, yes, she had eyes on when shooting, took 'em off for the pics)

The rifle is a hot pink .22... How she got it:

She was 4. We were at a local gun shop and she spotted it on the rack behind the counter... Got the clerk's attention "Mister... Can I hold that pink one please?" (Turns big eyes on)

Clerk looks at me "Is it okay?"

"Yeah, she know how to handle a gun"

He hands it down to her, she carefully shoulders it, very carefully pointing it AWAY from any people.

"I like it!!! Does it come in Hello Kitty?"

That sealed the deal... Had to get it for her...

That same day at the land, she wanted to try one of daddy's guns out. This was my shoulder, but she aimed and she pulled the trigger, and loved it:

Being born and raised on Long Island just outside NYC, my Mom would tell me that anybody who owned a gun was crazy. She died when I was 15. After the military, I moved to AZ and it took a few years to overcome that upbringing. Now I'm a member of the NRA and own more than one firearm. I'm not into posting the details but that thought process has been a long road. Good for you to teach your daughter how to properly use a firearm.
