Got a new computer the other day. Plugged in the phone line and tried to hook up the internet. Well I guess its a ethernet port and not a phone jack.  Angry   uglystupid2 He told me I need a 56k mod. No one has any in town. So now I cant get dial up anymore and have to go high speed.  Undecided They are coming out next week to set it up. Happy about the speed but was liking the $12 a month for the dial up. Oh well still better then living in the city.

We are only 5 miles from a major city, and for whatever reason, we only have dial up or cellular based service available.
Both are sad, but one is 25$ a month, and one is 59$ a month but double the speed.

I dream of dsl or cable...

Enjoy...!

I, too, dream of DSL or cable. Can't even get line-of-sight wireless (most of my neighbors can). So I'm on satellite. 60 bucks a month for crappy speeds, crappy reliability and throttling.  Angry

I think mines about $160.00 a month for cable-internet-phone....No way in hell I'd trade back to that slow dial-up even if they gave it to me  cooldude

The rural dream: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX

It'd be nice to see the rest of the country "wake up" to the broadband internet.  The big business won't bother until every last person in a densely populated area has been assimilated.  It's a shame it has to be this way.  Generally I don't like the government stepping in to do things like this, but I feel like it will never be done left to private industry.

I lived at the farm house I grew up at for a little over a year not too long ago.  When I moved there I took over my Dad's internet bill, 768k down, 128k up for ONLY $60/month.  Thankfully a few months later I saw AT&T working on the road side, and then swirls of DSL talk went around the neighbors.  The bill went to $45/month and 1.5mbps down where available.  Yea, it was high because I dumped them on the phone.  I do my own phone so it costs me $6/month instead of their line with no features $40/month.  I'm glad to be in the city for the internet speeds alone.  Everything else I can live without.  Since I spend quite a bit of time online at home it's a big bonus.  I miss peeing off my porch... now the neighbors just shake their heads.  Evil

Same with me, satellite here too.

But, my daughter tried her cell tower wireless here on her laptop, it was blazing fast. I may try it too eventually if DSL doesn't make it out here.

This thread made me google "tethering to a router"... I never thought much
about that... apparently, some smart phones can be wireless hotspots... I
think the service providers either cap how much data you can transfer per
month, or charge a whole bunch, but if you had the right smart phone, I
guess you could use it as your house router, and your laptop or whatever
would be connected to the Internet through that... of course, people who can't
get DSL might not get cell service either... I have the slowest (cheapest) kind
of DSL out here... and no smart phone  Smiley

My son and I both have smartphones. No signal here in the sticks. In fact, if we forget to turn them off, the battery commits suicide very quickly.  crazy2
