"The mountains are calling and I must go."

« on: December 18, 2011, 10:50:24 AM »

I have a friend who's wife tips the scales at about 340 lbs. She's 5'3" and insists on riding with him every time he rides. Her mass causes him to have to literally sit on the tank of their Harley. aside from the amazing fact that the bike can even move carrying that load, it looks down right dangerous to me. If they were to go down, I shudder to think what the results would be. No way would I even consider hauling such a load on my bike.

I don't know man.  Surely it wouldn't be pretty if any of us go down, but some would be messier than others.  I know surgeons - if you can get them to admit such a P.I. thing - hate working on the morbidly obese.  But the vertically challenged have a right to enjoy life too.  At least that's what my doc calls me.  And no, I'm not sayin what the scale says - other than the last time I stepped on a carnival scale, the card popped out & said "No Livestock please."  What's his name, the "Classically trained chef" on Hairy Bikers, Dave maybe, obviously enjoys his work.  He seems to like to ride too - but he would definitely be messy to operate on if needed.  Maybe he could just think of it as being ahead of his time, with a permanently installed crash bag.

look at it this way......with a very small set of wheelie bars installed, he could conceiveably eliminate 100% of his front tire wear.  with that said, it would now be cheaper to ride his bike......he would be saving B I G !!!!!!!  and yes jeff k you are right with the movie-time popcorn. 2funny 2funny 2funny 2funny

"If they were to go down, I shudder to think what the results would be."

That would depend on speed. My guess would be highway pegs, foot boards and maybe shifter or brake pedal. Crash bars would hopefully take the rest of it and save the tank as well as most chrome. All fixable.

A simple check in the owner's manual will confirm she needs her own bike. No jokes or anything, just stating the obvious-that bike is seriously overloaded and it's the rider's job to make sure it's safe to let out the clutch. If someone chooses to be that heavy there are consquences and a long list of things you can't do. Sitting in my 13' canoe with me would be one example. She needs to ride solo if she cares anything for her old man.

A trike should do it with an axle rated for 1/2 ton and some good 6 ply tires. It would give him a bit more room to ride comfortably as well.
Sounds like his better half supports his riding and why knock that. He just needs a machine rated for the load he's carrying.

Trike, bike, doesn't matter. She shouldn't be on it at that size. It's been my experience that people (not just women) with BMI's that grossly out of whack are dangerous in any situation where they are required to do anything physical.

None of us ride motorcycles because it's the safe thing to do. If the bike is having trouble with it then he should buy a valk and put some HD440's on it. What ever makes them happy is what they should do. Safe or not, no body gets outta this alive anyway. All that matters is that you do what good you can and have a good time while you're doing it.

As Bob Dylan might have said, "I look like a mattress balanced on a  bottle of wine" when I'm on my son's Ducati Monster, and beleive me when I say. I don't give a shi$, long as I'm having fun.

Shocked Shocked  This woman's BMI is 60.2.  Anyone who can read should know that is "grossly out of proportion".  A BMI over 45 - 50 is the highest classification -- SUPER OBESITY.

She is at EXTREMELY HIGH disease and life risk.  Better go ahead and enjoy the ride because her body is a time bomb waiting for premature explosion.  Sad Sad

cooldude I couldn't agree with you more. This Valkyrie has brought my wife and I closer than anything we've ever done together. If she supports it and they enjoy it, who are we to judge.
Unless they are concerned for their own well being, and it sounds they may be considering the options, what is the problem. I have seen plenty of people who shouldn't be on a bike. They were huge, had a balance problem. couldn't handle some situations, or were just too STUPID to no better for their own good.
It is absolutely shameful that same would even discuss how it would be like to have to help them if they went down or were in a accident. It shouldn't make a difference whether they are 90 lbs. or 350 lbs. they still are human, a friend.

Yeah we're not talking about someone on the line here. 5'3" 340 lbs is getting into square shaped territory. There's no debating whether or not you're fat or big boned at that point. Unless you're a juvenile hoofed animal you're fat.

BMI??? OK; I looked it up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index

Tried some online calculators and they are full of it. See above link - science warns that BMI is a population measure and not individual one. I'm 6'4, 260. Have a bit of a belly, no worse than most guys my age.
Calculators tell me I'm in the OBESE category and that 81% of people have better BMI than moi.
BMI is shortspeak for BITEMI.  Angry

I was going to ask how the hay politics got into this. What's liberal about health awareness?
But I won't axe. I mean ask. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts there are studies out there showing a greater degree obesity on the right side of the voting scales. I'd do a search but I have to get my obese carcass to bed.

Me and my Valk at Freedom Rock

« Reply #33 on: December 18, 2011, 07:46:45 PM »

I have a friend who's wife tips the scales at about 340 lbs. She's 5'3" and insists on riding with him every time he rides. Her mass causes him to have to literally sit on the tank of their Harley. aside from the amazing fact that the bike can even move carrying that load, it looks down right dangerous to me. If they were to go down, I shudder to think what the results would be. No way would I even consider hauling such a load on my bike.

It just doesn't look dangerous, it is dangerous.

The question isn't that the gal should look to a healthier lifestyle, her health is not relevant.
The question is about her weight relative to the safety of riding a bike that is not designed to carry that weight.

In the normal course of a leisurely bike ride, sure, all is well.
But panic stops, having to make sudden evasive maneuvers, to handling some kind of equipment failure like a flat tire would be made more difficult by factors of magnitude such that you couldn't recover or make such maneuvers with such a significant excess in weight.

I'll bet that the drive train on the bike is in a state of constant repair.

Got a guy here in town that used to ride a crotch rocket. He weighs 400+ lbs. (After years of that He went to an 1800 VTX). But he would either trade off the bike every year or it was in for major repairs, Clutch, bearings, etc. far in excess of normal wear.

I'm not a big fan of trikes, but this would be an exception. A trike conversion with a really beefed up suspension and drive train would be the ticket in making their ride as safe as it could be.

Right now I'd say the race is on between them losing control and crashing or the bike just breaking.

now back to the health risks donald, you must be one smelly mofo because 90% of the accidents in the homes are in the shower and a risk is a risk wether its a fat chick in the back of the bike or your scrubbing your balls. someone could get hurt. now has this womans husband bitched about the comfort of the rids ot and damage she has caused to thier bike? if not i dont think its anyones business to say just how fat is too fat and i think i still have pics of just how fat i am so that makes me an athoritity of fat and i use every inch of it.

Apparently donaldcc is the judge! And he has statistics to govern with. All bow in his presence ,lest you be judged next!      Only liberal when it suits them I suppose  crazy2

I'm not judging her, just stating medical facts and risks.  Personally, I think it is sad.

You can ignore the facts if you like, i don't care. Wander through your life in ignorance if that is your pleasure.

How does knowing that a Super Obese person has health risks make one a "liberal"??   ??? ???

ok you have menchioned the safty risks (and this is where the true ass in me shines thru) i am fat and was a special needs kids in school si i have the right to pick on fatties and retatds (dont make me point fingers.you know who you are)

now back to the health risks donald, you must be one smelly mofo because 90% of the accidents in the homes are in the shower and a risk is a risk wether its a fat chick in the back of the bike or your scrubbing your balls. someone could get hurt. now has this womans husband bitched about the comfort of the rids ot and damage she has caused to thier bike? if not i dont think its anyones business to say just how fat is too fat and i think i still have pics of just how fat i am so that makes me an athoritity of fat and i use every inch of it.

That was my whole point, Junior. If it doesn't make a Rat's behind to either of them, what is it for someone else to say!
