I just pulled my filter to clean it. Instructions do not say weather or not to re-oil the foam pre-filter . Do you just clean it  or do you re-oil it after cleaning.TIA

Just clean the foam filter.  Some leave the foam filter out!

Oil only the K&N filter itself.  Following the directions is important in this regard.

I always spray my foam pre-filter with brake cleaner and cover with a rag and stomp on it a few times.  Let it dry, and done.

Brake cleaner's not to harsh on the foam, last long? I use mineral spirits from wal-mart on all my foam dirt bike filters & K&N filters, they last forever & cheap too.

Brake cleaner is nothing but aerosol alcohol.

I don't know where you heard that but it's wrong. There are some brake cleaners on the market with some very dangerous things (like MEK and acetone) in them.

they're only dangerous if you inhale!!

anyway, i just wash my foam under soap and water then let it dry, same thing with the regular filter, then spray oil on top side, as stated earlier....  with out the foam you'll get some fine dust make it through the filter, you'll see it on the plastic of you air box.

True but MEK can melt foams and plastics so you need to test if before using it.

I ask the guru here at home.(25 yr. old just  graduated from A&M son.) He said wash foam with warm soapy water, rinse and air dry. I  followed the K&N instructions on the rest. He has been running one on his truck for years. Thanks for all the info.

My pre-filter is on it's last ride. It was pretty bad after I washed it I had to let it dry laying flat on some paper towels and very gently put it back on.

Throw it away.

I agree. I never did understand the efficacy of that thing, so I never installed it. Knowing now, how it deteriorates into pieces, just reinforces my perception.

I never wash the pre filter......just shake it, tap it with the palm of my hand, if it dont look disgusting I put it back on.  I didnt use it at first and my plugs were a tad light colored.  after putting the pre-filter in the plugs burned a puurfect brown color.  I wash the primary filter with the recharge kit and a soft flow of a garden hose barely turned on about every tire change....23K or so

I use the prefilter too.  And when I pull the tank and see the bigger crud on the prefilter, and the K & N element only holding tiny dust, I am happy with the setup.  Not to mention the leaner-than-necessary issue.

Since I live at 3000 ft elevation I run without the prefilter.
