I realize that finding a used speedo that matches the actual mileage on my bike is pretty much impossible but can a speedo be set to a particular mileage? also would I have to replace the speedo gear at the wheel?

A drill on the cable?  I'm pretty sure the gears at the wheel will be the same US vs. Canadian parts because both speedos go to 144 MPH & 220 km/h

the MPH speedo has KPH on the inside ring in smaller numbers and vice versa.... you can buy a new MPH head and spin it over with a power drill to get the mileage if you want - there may be a trade available with someone that wants to go the other way if you have a good KPH head.

What about changing the round plate with the numbers on it? Are they available anywhere?

Here's one for a good price if you would decide to swap the face plates or use a drill to get it up to your mileage

The challenge will be opening the speedo housing without wrecking it even if the dial is available. I went the other way (mph to kph) and it was an easy change and I wasn't worried about the difference in mileage. I just put a sticker on the kph speedo underneath the chrome housing with the date of change, mileage on old speedo and kilometers on the new(s/h) speedo.

Occasionally there have been speedometers for sale on E-Bay.

And I am sure Pinwall has some also.

About the mileage.  What does that matter. It's a bike that is already 10 years older or more!

A new faceplate would work for speed, but the trip odometers will still record in KMs. And seeing that the trip odometers are basically the fuel gauge on Standards and Tourers, it could get confusing...

Fred.

Good catch Fred. The face is just a needle pointing to a guage. If the gauge reads MPH or KPH, it doesn't matter. But the trip odometer will only read one or the other, miles or KM.

I take it we are talking about the std/tourer model dial guage. But I was wondering about the IS model, if this could be changed. I bought my IS from the US in MPH, wonder if there could be a jumper/dip switch to change it to KM.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Guts would be hard to change out. I had a wrecked speedo I needed parts off of and the stuff is really in there.

My IS is also in miles, here in kms land. Used to it now and it might do for a feeble excuse if I get pulled over.
I'd be nervous about opening a speedo. Had a 1984 Honda Sabre V65 once with a cracked speedo. Played around and ruined it some more. Used replacements were around $500! Maybe because it was only made for two years, but that scared me off playing with them.

Speaking of speedos...had a car with speedo that changed from miles to kms at a push of the button. Wife drove it to work for a midnight shift (15 miles of curvy, hilly road, limit is 80kms/hr, or 50 miles/hr). Came back next morning all flustered, saying something is wrong with the car: "It just wouldn't get up to 80! I *felt* like I was going fast, passed several cars, but I had a heck of a time getting up to the speed limit." Priceless...

For all the time, effort and money involved with the swtich to a MPH reading, think of the following; I lived in placed wher all the vehicles and road signs were in KpH.  We simply multiplied the KpH by 6 and divided by ten to get a very clowe estimate of the MPH speed.  e.g.   40 KpH   6 x 40 is 240 or almost 24 mph. 60 Km x 6 is 360 or almot 36 Mph.  Its very easy to do in your head and its close enough to keep the PoLice off yer butt... police..jmO      Peace.

Even easier would be to do the math for the most usual speed limits (25, 35, etc), and stick a few narrow slivers of electrical tape (or a marker pen) at those points on the speedo faceplate. Given that our speedos are already off by 5% at all times and speeds, close is generally good enough.... except maybe in 25mph neighborhoods.

My US speedo on my 97 STD had both MPH and KMH on it if that is the case with the one you are importing to Canada the RIV won't make you swap it out.

If you haven't had any experience importing a bike or other vehicle to Canada from the States make sure you check out the RIV site on the internet and check out what you have to do to bring it in.

Also, before you cross the border, the US customs want the papers 72 hours before, & they are only open during weekdays 8am-3:30pm. No after hours crossing.

You don't have to do anything to a Honda MC, to have RIV accept it, except the RIV inspection.

thanks for the info on RIV. but as luck would have it any vehicle 15 years old or older doesn't require it.
