We've done this ride for several years and only not been able to make it twice because of weather....New Year's Day....Ride to Mt. Mitchell , North Carolina.Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in the eastern United States.Anyone wanting to join us ? 2007 was the coldest of any year we've made this ride I was on my Suzuki Bandit 1200S on that trip ( I miss that bike ) .Last year we took off from The Great State Of Tennessee in the pouring rain and only made it to Hot Springs ,NC when the sideway pouring rain and very heavy fog made it unsafe to make Mt. Mitchell. This is a weather pending ride on my end....Jess ( 6juggs ) and Frank Smoak both from South Carolina started this ride I never see either on here anymore in fact I saw Jess had his Valk for sale in the VRCC classifieds  Undecided

Hey Joe! Every year we Arizona folks enjoy the same New Years ride and have for some years now. Last years was a kiss my ice ride for sure! Might of gotten above freezing towards the end and we stayed in the non-mountainous flat lands. Always weird to see ice along the side of the roads here in the desert. Now, this year, it looks like a high of 72 on the 1st. Whoo-Hoo for us!
Hope ya'll make it to the top this year!!

Next year, Lord willing, I'll join y'all if I can get enough of an advance notice to schedule it into my holiday plans. I'd love to ride in the snow just once in my life.

Yep, The Crab shack is quite a dinning experience. You won't fine the same atmosphere anywhere. Feeding the gators while you wait for a table is a unique experience also.

Hey Joe,

I been ponderin' on this sumthin' fierce... and I just about got myself talked into it. Fact is, I've even gone so far as to see if TimBob & Sherry might wanna do it too. They can't for a couple of reasons, but another riding bud of mine thinks he will. So, if'n it's OK, he and I will figure on joinin' y'all fer the ride to the top... or maybe a bit more.

The weather this weekend looks to be downright tolerable, so gettin' up yonder on Saturday and doin' the ride on Sunday looks like it should be just what I need to cure this serious case of PMS I've been sufferin' through lately. Monday looks to be the 'challenging' day, however.

Forecast calls for rainy and cold Monday, so we're figurin' on staying over Sunday and Monday nights, then retrunin' to dear ol' Bama on Tuesday. Not a problem... but it does present some obvious questions for us... like where to stay...

Do you have any recommendations? We're waaay flexible on this, so we could stay in the Clinton - Knoxville area, or we could stay around Waynesville, NC, or even Asheville. Problem is, we don't know of any places that meet our criteria... That is, alcohol availability and/or a bar/lounge nearby, plus a decent restaurant... at least a Hardees where we can git some of their mouth waterin' biscuits 'n gravy fer breakfast... You know... the kind of place you'd want to stay at...

Either way, we'll plan to hook up with y'all at some point fer that great soundin' ride... Oh, just outa curiosity... is the restaurant on Mt Mitchell open on New's Year Day? Doesn't really matter, though... I know y'all will be eatin' someplace, so no biggie either way... jis wonderin'...

Would love to have y'all join us Bruce. Clinton has several motels and restaurants. The Holiday Inn Express is a brand new motel with a nice steakhouse (steakhouse has booze and cold beer ) next door also has a Waffle House next door. Hardee's / McD's and (3 ) Quickie Marts all in rock throwin' distance. Eric ( The Kid ) and his brother TODD stayed there when we did the " Land Between The Lakes Ride " . http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/us/en/clinton/ctisf/hoteldetail

A Enco-Lodge is also close and would be cheaper I have no doubt you also have a Super 8 a Comfort Inn and Red Roof all at this Clinton / Norris exit 122 off I-75...We could meet y'all sunday morning @ 9:00 for breakfast at Hardee's and all ride up together ....Let me know what you plan  cooldude

I stumbled across this info about Mt Mitchell and thought that I'd share it:

Hey Joe!

Thanks for the welcome and all the info! OK, we'll plan on staying at Exit 122 in Clinton and joining y'all for breakfast Sunday morning at 9:00am at Hardees. I ain't sure just now which motel we'll be staying in (haven't run it by my partner yet), but it will be one of the ones at that exit.

The weather forecast is proving to be a bit squirrely as usual, but generally speaking it actually appears to be improving! That said, we will plan to stay at the same place again Sunday evening, but we may get to leave on Monday instead of laying around all that day... Either way, we'll be lookin' fer ya at Hardees Sunday morning...

I'm meeting Coot in Ellijay, GA around noon tomorrow. At the roundabout downtown Ellijay.

We've both got cabin fever. Going to take advantage of a few dry days.

We'll be in Maggie Valley Saturday night. Possibly at the Holiday Motel

Bruce I'm sure The Holiday Inn will get the deepest in your pocket of any of the other motels however it is the closest to the steakhouse and cold beer. It and the Enco Lodge are walking distance the others you would more than likely not want to walk that far....I'm sending you a PM with my cell # ....When you get in the hood give me a call I'll drive up and take y'all out in a nice warm car for supper  cooldude

I'm meeting Coot in Ellijay, GA around noon tomorrow. At the roundabout downtown Ellijay.

We've both got cabin fever. Going to take advantage of a few dry days.

We'll be in Maggie Valley Saturday night. Possibly at the Holiday Motel
