I gave my little one a helmet for Christmas this year. I took her for a ride around the block first thing today. The other kids in the neighborhood were outside driving their toy cars around in the driveway, she was on the back of the Valkyrie, and loving it. She decided she wanted to ride with me rather than ride with Momma in the car when we went over to visit family for Christmas dinner. I'm thinking we have a new fanatic. Here she is preparing for the first ride: Sorry for the blurry picture, but you can still make out the huge smile: And, she liked it well enough to have THIS expression when preparing for her second ride: Mark

Mark, You know she needs a pink helmet with sculls. She is so excited, but you may never get to ride solo again. Go Shelley! You rock!!! BJ Hay I think I can live with never riding solo again. I loved it, too. This morning, when we were getting ready to run some errands, she asked if we could leave Lydia (her little sister) at home so we could ride to our destination. Yup, she's hooked! As for the pink with skulls: We're pondering on painting a design on. It won't be pink with skulls, but it will be good. I hope to reveal it at a future gathering. Just make sure she understands her pilot has to be over 30 years old at least until she is 30 or so! Thanks for sharing. ~Jeff
I intend to make her understand that her pilot has to be ME until she's 30 or so. I probably won't have much success with that. I probably won't have much success telling her she can't date until she's 30 or so either, but a man can dream, can't he? Mark

My oldest grandson is 7 and has no daddy in his life. He was born with a pretty serious birth defect and had a very rough start in life but survived and is doing well now. Because he wasn't perfect, his jerk daddy didn't want anything to do with him so my daughter told the jerk to hit the road. Grandpa (me) has always been there for them and he calls me his best buddy. Ever since he could walk he loved motorcycles and loved for me to take him on rides through the country on the rural roads around my place. Since he was so small I made a device for him to ride in which sat on my tank in front of me. I will never forget the smile on his face the first time I told him to hop on the passenger seat behind me. Since that time, He and I have shared a lot of miles together and I cannot begin to tell you what that experience means to me. I have five grandkids and love them all dearly and thankfully for me I get to see them all the time. Grandkids make our getting old more tolerable. (LOL)

I like the passenger arm rests. I feel like if I took my son (7) out on the road I'd be concerned with him leaning where he shouldn't in a panic. It's nice to have the bars to keep them in the seat.

Ya'll might have been able to tell already, but I'm having a blast with this. We went over the Kemah bridge today. What did I hear from the backseat as we went down the other side? "WHEEEEEEEE!!!!!"

On the Border. They were remarkably unhelpful (never run into that with them before, may have just been a grumpy sales lady), but they had something that was serviceable. It's an adjustable helmet, with foam inserts to modify the fit.

Stephanie's already feeling the pressure. She's beginning to realize she's going to have to fight with the five year old to retain her throne back there. I think we can wait a bit on the 250 for Shelley, though. When she was four, she begged to go for a ride. I told her she wasn't old enough. She looked at me like I was stupid (practicing for teenage years, I guess) and said "No, with YOU!!!" Mark

So, I took Shelley on her first night ride on Wednesday. A few amusing points: First, since there was still water on the roads from a previous rain, she had an observation about that. I could tell she was looking back and forth. I asked what was up. She said she was "looking out for puddles". She decided that if we hit a puddle, we would slide and fall down and "scratch up her brand new helmet". So, she was keeping a close eye on all the puddles we were passing. I suppose it was to make sure that none jumped out and grabbed us. Se wasn't scared, just concerned about her helmet. After I reminded her that I had ridden in the rain before, and knew how to handle it, she quit worrying about her helmet. Second was as we crossed a part of Clear Lake. I pointed out the moon reflecting in the water, and how it was easier to see things from the back of the motorcycle when she doesn't have to look over a car door. The response was "Yeah, it's almost like we're outside!"
I love kids. They're so much fun to be around (most of the time).
Mark

Sounds like she is developing the skills needed to pilot from the pillion seat.
