Been a member for almost 30 years. I feel that anyone who rides should ante up and join. AMA is our voice in Washington, fighting for our rights.
Also, if you use automatic renewal, you get free roadside service/towing for any vehicle you own.

Been a member for years. If you get a full membership renewed automatically, you get free road service for your bike and all other vehicles you own. They also have a monthly mag. Also a lot of bike articles, competition, and legislative updates. Well worth the 35 bux annual. It's a lot cheaper than AAA. Also offer a lifetime membership. Hoser

+1 I really believe in this! Took me a while longer to realize the value, so for me not 30 years yet. In addition, some places, like Bike Bandit, offer discounts to AMA members, plus I got a big break on my Insurance as well.

I joined the AMA many, many years ago. The AMA was the sanctioning body for most amateur racing and the Road Riding events. I was on the AMA District 14 board of directors which oversaw how events were held and we also heard greivances by racers and even road riders, we also were required to regularly attend risk management courses as well as first aid and accident scene management classes.
I did not receive compensation for all the work and travel we did, but it was out of a need to help others that the District board members and chairpersons felt an obligation.
I'm still an AMA member, but as a liason to ABATE of MI and my yearly AMA dues are paid by ABATE. I feel that I must contribute or give back to the sport that completely changed my life.
They eyecare discounts were the only "perk" I ever used.

I've been a member for some time. I consider that the AMA is to riders as the NRA is to gun owners.

I have been thinking about joining for years but never got around to it. I believe all my questions have been answered except one. Do they offer lodging discounts like AAA?

Life member, also NRA life.
I do not agree with all of either's stands, but they are my voice. They are the best we have in both fields. If you ride a MC, you should be a AMA member.

I have been a member for 37 years and I have used the roadside assistance twice. Once for auto and once for bike. Both experiences were very satisfactory. The AMA has done a lot to keep us on the road and on the trails.

There is a group called ABATE that says they represent Florida motorcycle owners and riders. Is this basically the AMA? I don't know much about either.
They are not afiliated as far as I know, both do good work for bikers. Hoser

Pluggy,
The AMA is the "American Motorcyclist Association" and they work on both a State/District are and on a national level to help preserve your rights as a motorcyclist.
ABATE stands for "American Bikers Aimed Towars Education" and works on a state level only, as each state has their own set of issues regarding the rights of motorcyclists. ABATE tends to support new rider training as well as trying to convince non-endorsed riders to become legal, and they also teach motorcycle awarness classes at drivers education classes.
The MRF or "Motorcyclist Riders Foundation" is basically the cohesive structure for all of ABATE. They are the biggest motorcycle lobbists in Washington DC.
Both the AMA and ABATE work together on statewide issues, while the MRF and the AMA work on national issues.
The MRF is also involved in international issues concerning all types of riders. Such as the highly restrictive laws concerning what type/size motorcycle you may purchase and ride in the EU,...that is they don't get a hold on in this country.
