These were some tough built cars.
Back in the old days when they had a wreck, the driver would likely be killed although the car might be basically still driveable.
Now days, the cars disintergrate, dispersing the wreck's energy leaving nothing intact but the cockpit.
But now, the driver generally survives.

Yep, you're right the Marmon Wasp. It won the first Indy 500 in 1911 and was the first to use a rear view mirror.
Our town was competing in an Indy 500 contest for small towns (we lost) and this is the parade connected with it. Both of these cars were running under their own power.
These cars, and a lot of others, are in the Kruse museum in Auburn, In. They are part of the immense museum Of WWII vehicles. The ACD museum is close by.
Maybe Mark and i can try another VRCC event involving a trip to Auburn next year.

Yes, I do remember the sounds of the Offenhauser fours at Indy. I was to a few time trials at Indy when the combination of the Offenhauser fours and Firestone tires would always be in the car that won the race. To lend a change, Maserettis and the Novi Governor ( a V8 Screamer) . At one time there was a diesel powered car and even a six wheel tandem car.
This was the time of quarter midgets powered by Ford '60' V8's, running on 1/'4 mile tracks .

Back before they had a "big one" the Milwaukee Wi mile was one week after Indy. Can not for the life of me remember WHEN it changed to 2 weeks after Indy. Anywho-i was fortunate enough to see the S T P turbines run at Milwaukee. Key word here"see". We were up in the grand stands between the start/finish line and turn one at Milwaukee when the turbine went by the first time and i remember to this day the track announcer saying-in case any of ya'll missed it the S T P turbine just went past folks. The turbines only ran that one year as the sanctioning body either restricted the intake or exhaust size which killed any chance of it being compeitive ever again. Up until that point in time it was the most fantastic blue race car i had ever seen and almost heard. Wayne-i hope YOU get a memory jog outa this. RIDE SAFE.

The closest I ever came to an OFFY was owning a 63 Jag XKE duel overhead cams six cyl. From what I understand it is similar to an OFFY.I'm not sure but it sounded great an ran fast.A good 145-150mph
