Just bought some 1/4 inch fuel line hose (says so right on the hose). Stupid auto parts store didn't have any spring clamps and the idiot never heard of them. So I have to order them on line. Not a problem but I have know what size clamps fit a 1/4 inch hose. the inside diameter is 1/4 inch. The outside diameter is 7/8 inch (as measured with a ruler). A 7/8 inch clamp will be the same size as the hose so it won't work. Will a 3/8 inch clamp work? If not, what size clamp do I need? Pardon my ignorance, I was never any good at math.

CORRECTION, the OD is 7/16, not 7/8. Like I said, I'm no good at math.

I have never bought that type of clamp. So I'm guessing a 1/4 inch clamp would fit a 1/4 inch OD hose as tight as necessary to clamp the hose on a fitting. If they were labeled according to the ID you would have to know the thickness of the hose wall.

The hose is clearly labeled "1/4 inch fuel line hose" but this refers to the inside diameter.
The grist of the matter is, I have to order these clamps and would rather get the right ones the first time as I'm probably looking at minimum a week to get them. If I order the wrong ones, it's another week. Hence my question. Surely there is an answer out there somewhere. It may very well be that a 7/16 clamp is made to fit a 7/16 hose, etc., etc. But I don't know this.
And btw, these clamps are sized 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, etc. I just don't know if this refers to the actual size of the clamp or the hose size it's made for.

You could also send a question to the supplier you're dealing with.

Every time I remove that type of clamp for whatever reason, it never goes back on. I'll replace it with a screw type, especially on a fuel line or any line that handles a liquid.

Yep,,,,, an besides it's too difficult to get a pliers in under the tank for those spring clamps. ***

UPDATE -
I should have mentioned that this is for a Honda ruckus. It's pretty tight in the engine compartment so I think the spring loaded clamps are the best choice. These are made of spring steel so they're as durable as they can possibly be. I decided to order the Honda OEM "Tubes" instead of using standard fuel line. I was concerned about the two 45 degree turns these make in tight quarters. Also, I bought an assortment pack of these clamps so I'll be able to zero in on the correct size. The Honda OEM clamps are one use and made of wire that has no spring to it at all. Sorriest hose clamp I've ever seen, hence me wanting to replace them with these much much sturdier clamps.

I've found spring clamps at O'Reillys Auto Parts in a blister pack hanging on the shelf. It is an assortment of about 8 pieces. Bypass the store clerk and study the shelves and probably most any auto parts store will have these.

Of the 4 local auto parts stores in the area, O'Reilys was the one I didn't go to because it was way on the other side of town. Nice to know that they have them in case I need more.
