As I fired her up this morning I noticed an exhaust "leak" pointing straight down right behind the seam in front of the passenger's peg. I never really noticed it before, but this morning it was pretty chilly and conditions were right for the typical condensation.

HUMmmm.. after I got to work I inspected the "leak" and noticed a small factory-made hole about a 1/16" in diameter right behind the strap on the muffler... question is... what is the purpose for the hole?

That hole is there to let condensation out of the exhaust system just in case you do not drive far enough to completely evaporate it.  If the condensation remains in the exhaust is will rust out the system.
