It shouldn't matter whether or not spelling errors bother you or whether or not you can figure out what somebody is saying. And I don't see a reason for this thread to be hijacked and turned into a big debate over "ignorance". The original poster simply suggested that folks use a spell checker. That's not hard to understand.

Spell check works fine when you're typin' drunk.  cooldude  ,but the spell "givadamn" is what's broken!

Is there a punctuation checker?  Or a keyboard made for my fat fingers that will speed up my hunt and peck typing style?

+1 & a 1/2  cooldude

Yes My GIVADAMN is broke. Any panzy can spell check. I bet you don't even fart in public do you Gryphon.

Man up dude, we get the > across.

Seriously, My Givadamn is broke.

This reminds me of my first college level English class. I wrote a paper on why spelling and correct sentence structures in writing and communication should not reflect upon someones intelligence. My professor asked me why I chose a engineering major and not writing. I politely told him I don't care about using there, they're, and their. The English language is only graded by someone's own drastic opinion on another.  In arithmetic, 1+1 is always going to be 2, no matter what country your from or what planet you are on. I prefer to use abbreviations. IDGAF about spelling, grammar, or punctuation. Give-a-damn is broken along with Big Al's  cooldude

but please don't post any more country music.  I have my limits.

Ten thumbs up on this one Carl !!

Like the continuing 'Joke' and 'rode to work' threads which I enjoy, it would be great for all music vids to be posted on one thread (so I could ignore it).

It's spelled "you're"......   Wink

This is getting hilarious....and reeeediculous!!! For the last few years prior to retirement, one of my jobs was to analyze every audit file before it was sent out to the taxpayer for assessment. Obviously it was a gov't. agency. Not only did I have to read through the oft times atrocious write-up, but had to read through the actual audit procedure used and determine if the appropriate methods and statute(s) had been applied. One gal in particular was a real challenge, claiming she was in her last six hours before earning her Masters and didn't appreciate me telling her to make changes. I got tired of hearing that so one day really lit her fuse by telling her "then it's about time her writing actually looked like she was about to earn her Masters." Many times during our staff meetings, I took time to explain to those present that any piece of work that left our office was a reflection on the office as a whole. Most understood, some didn't....or refused to accept that concept. What they didn't seem to understand was quite simple; if an attorney found one small error, they could get the entire audit thrown out by taking it to court.

In short, I was a stickler in every respect; spelling, sentence structure, punctuation....the whole nine yards. In the eight or so years I was in that position, I never had a file come back or contested. In the years prior, they averaged 2-3 per month. That made feel good about myself....and my bank account because someone actually noticed the change.

As for the "problem child" after I retired, she was eventually promoted and was burdened with the same type of work she fought over with me. After the first three months in her new position she sent me a note on a nice "thank you" card, saying she now understood and thanked me profusely for teaching her. She now had her Masters and had taken the time to go back through her thesis to review how it was written. She was thrilled when it was accepted the first time through from a prof that had the reputation of turning them back for correction or expansion.

So, the question remains; does it pay to have/use good grammer, spelling, punctuation, etc.  Probably so in the work place if the job requires it. But, in a motorcycle forum such as this one;  frankly Scarlett.....   Grin

Reb, Eric....hope you guys understood....I'm in full agreement. It can be taken waaay too far. I try to be correct in most functions, but that's just me and it's habit formed by having parents that were "edjumacaters!"  It used to drive my girls nuts and to this day old dad here gets it with both barrels from all of them. Even my former wife told me one day I was an "educated stuffed shirt." It really ticked her off when I thanked her profusely, telling her I felt I had finally "arrived."  I was joking, apparently she wasn't.  crazy2

Maybe someone could suggest spell checkers that can be added to Internet Explorer and other browsers.

This one is very easy to use:

http://www.iespell.com/

All you have to do to use it is right click from the entry field that you are typing from.

So for those of you that would like to do Gryphon Rider a favour favor and help him keep his B/P under control please install it.  Evil

I understand what your saying. I guess at my younger age the text messages and facebook post have created a different English language. Which sometimes interfere with my communication to others. My family (PARENTS) came down on me hard when my enlistment ended in the Navy and I came home. I tended to use the F-word as a noun, adjective, and verb in about every sentence I spoke. It was always just second nature in the military. I guess our environments tend to change our proper communication skills.

- I had no intentions of coming off like a smart-ass. That's Anvils Job on the board.  cooldude

It's funny how people make assumptions about my character and motivations simply because I point out a common problem and point out a simple partial solution.  I'm truly not all that concerned about what you (the offended) do with it, but I am curious about the antagonism towards doing something so simple that can make you so much more readable?  Life is simply more pleasant when people do "give a damn" about how they appear.  Life would certainly be less pleasant if more women had the same "I don't give a damn" attitude?

P.S. For Internet Explorer spell checking, I linked to Speckie in my original post, which checks as you type, just like Microsoft Word does.

Hey GR, your are right, of course.  Little effort required and decent improvement in work product (writing).  My push-back was not directed at you, but at 40 years of required dotting eyes and crossing tees. I meant no offense to you at all.  I like your posts and contributions here.  Keep them coming.

With this crowd, you had to expect some........... feedback.

I agree that spell check is an AWESOME learning tool, and I frequently wonder why people do not know how to spell. But to assume that every misspelled word is due to ignorance of proper spelling is one thing......to tell the ignorant un-spellers that they need lessons is an hole nuther kind ov kraezy!

Could Admin add one to the preview panel?

I'm not sure that's an option with this board.

I personally use Mozilla Firefox which has one built in.  It checks as I type which I find most effective.

Maybe someone could suggest spell checkers that can be added to Internet Explorer and other browsers.

I use ieSpell.    It is free and loads onto your IE Toolbar under Tools.

Some of the smartest people I know can't spell or compose grammar well.  I've also known a lot of intelligent people who lack the ability to debate/argue effectively, what you may refer to as not very witty. And I know a whole lot of seemingly unintelligent people who can argue/debate till the cows come home (hope my boss and co-workers are not reading this)  crazy2

When I was employed in Environmental Engineering, I was responsible for writing  proposals to the DOD using Mil Standards 810, etc.  The written intention, on costs and how to perform a test, had to be clear, concise, and with no spelling mistakes.

Although I only had somewhat less than two years of college, I didn't have many problems.  I attributed that to my parochial grade school education, spelling bees, slaps on the wrist and smacks on the behind if you didn't pay attention and learn the English language.

I was unpopular with the younger graduate degree engineers if I mentioned to them that all their knowledge was useless if they couldn't put that knowledge into a concise and error free technical paper.  Many couldn't.

I'm with John though.  It's not needed here and I'll repeat the words of Rhett Butler.

That is an extreme example, I will give you that, but in all honesty, I mostly prefer people how they really are, rather than those people who, not only cover their actually faces, but their whole image as well.  Nothing wrong with a little originality with either looks, speech, writings, musings, or outlook.  And as a bonus, if you don't make the poor women spend 2-3 hours in the bathroom getting preened and perfectly fake, then, first of all, you won't have to yell at them to hurry up while the valkyrie is already warming up in the driveway, secondly, they will have more time to do various things around the house, and thirdly, you won't have to hear them *%*&^$%&^%ing at you about it.

And don't get me talking about the people who put on the white suits one day a week, let your hot be hot, and your cold...cold

I don't know if it's you (other VRCC members) or me, but it seems that the spelling on this message board is getting worse.  As with any message board, the writing here runs the gamut from quite good to downright awful, but some of you make me wonder if you are drunk as you compose your messages.  Please do everyone who wants to read your writing a favour and at least add a spell-checker to your web browser.  The one I use for Internet Explorer 9 is Speckie (http://www.speckie.com/home/), which puts a squiggly red line under misspelled words.  I know spelling is just one aspect of good writing and we're very informal here, but it's the least you can do since you're using a computer of some type to post here anyway.  Everyone who posts here is doing so because they want to communicate something, but poor writing and spelling distracts from your message, just like how poor singing can make you plug your ears for a song with a good message.

Also, please make use of the "preview" button and proof-read your message before posting it.

Your spell check is working but you may want to check the settings on your arrogance filter.
