My first handgun was a 38 revolver (which I still have), and I have moved on into the SA world, but am considering another revolver; a convertible that will do .22 and 22Mag (quick cylinder change).  I know Ruger has the Single Six but it is SA only, but Taurus has come out with the Taurus 992 DA convertible with a quick change cylinder.  I am curious to know how many "convertible" owners  really convert theirs or if it they keep it in one configuration?  And, if you have other convertible related information that you can share....

Not that I would want to carry this on the Valk,  Wink but if I took the bike to the range I would.  The road to the range is a bit rough, even in the truck, and sometimes more suited for a dirt bike.

Thanks

I had the Ruger Convertible.  I shot it mostly in .22, not mag.  but that is because of cost.  Far cheaper to shoot cans with the non-mag.  But, if I wanted jack rabbits or something, I would put in the mag cylinder.

I have a Super Single Six Ruger SA with the convertible cylinder.  I shoot almost all .22 long rifle.  I shoot the .22 Mag in the other cylinder just for kicks, and not much kick at that.  In other words, for me, it's mostly a novelty.  I wouldn't pay more for a convertible cylinder as I can't see the need.  The .22 long rifle round is much cheaper.to shoot. If you're thinking about going hunting for small game, the .22 Win mag might be good as it will give more  velocity out of the revolver's short barrel.

Now my Black Widow Extra small revolver uses .22 Winchester mags.  It needs the extra help.

+1 on what he said. 2funny Cost considerations between 22 mag and 22 L R is the reason for far more 22 L R over 22 mag.  Wink I do like the bit of extra reach with the mag though. coolsmiley RIDE SAFE.

+2 on what they said.

Have several convertibles.

Not worth the additional cost unless you really have a use for the 22 mag.
You also usually give up a little accuracy in 22lr if the barrel is grooved for the 22 mag, as most convertibles are.

If you really need both calibers and the best accuracy consider 2 firearms.

I have to of them, an EAA 4 inch, and an old H&R 6 1/2.  They both shoot the mag round much more accurate then they shoot the 22lr round.   From what I have read, the mag and lr are two different bore sizes, the mag being the larger.  So are barrels are in the mag size bore, thus the poor accuracy in the 22lr.  I agree buy the pistol in the caliber you plan to shoot.

.22mag is a good deal more expensive than .22lr, but will not do that much more from a short barrel firearm.  The convertable is a nice option to have, but if you are like us you will not use the mag cylinder much.

We trudge on.

Good question. Kit and I are looking at getting SAR's in LR/Mag this spring. Thought I could use the LR for targets and the mag for shooting birds/rodents.  Cheesy

Good points.  I am aware of the cost diff between 22 and the Mag, and agree that .22 would probably be primary use.  I understand the bbl size diff and potential accuracy issues using .22 in a 22Mag bbl, but thought the convertible factor might outweigh that, since I have some .22 semi autos anyhow.

Solo1, I had an NAA mini .22Mag but didn't really use it,found it to be too small and painful to shoot, ended up a novelty safe queen mostly, and now its gone.

I guess I really can't truly justify a "need" for the .22 Mag use, but thought it would be a nice option if the occasion to use .22 mag came up.  The convertible revolver is a bit more expensive than a standard one.  I guess it's just an itch that needs to get scratched.

Thanks for inputs.

I have read some review info on the heritage guns and don't think I would get one of those.

Got the Ruger, also have a Henry lever in 22 mag.  Have been thinking about the 17 HMR for a little better accuracy and longer range.  I mostly shoot the Long Rifle out of the Ruger, but usually keep it in Mag mode when on standby.  Mostly for plinking I use a Ruger 22 Standard, or a Browning long barrel target.

Fudgie,   Here is one video review of that, and I will say for the price it seems to be a pretty decent gun, but I'm not a real fan of SA.  Even if I had a DA I could use it more in SA mode, but that would be my choice I guess.  I'm not sure if I care for the style of that SA and the method in which it loads/unloads.  I might just like the DA and the style look of the DA Taurus 992... but for the price.... the Rough Rider isn't bad.

I dont have any SA yet but the ones i handled I like. I shoot left handed and the SA makes for a easier reload.

I'm with you Brian!  You can't beat SA revolvers especially Rugers.  I have three of them and they work great for us lefties!
