Congratulations, one no-butt at a time, been 20 some odd years, stopped counting, no more urges for a long time. 10 years of trying, finally got it right. Your lungs will thank you! One of the hardest things I've ever done, just stubborn.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I quit 3 years ago, April.
Tammy gave a me a Christmas present in 2010 and hasnt had one since.
In about a month you'll notice how bad smokers stink after a smoke.
Thats when youre truly done. Coffie tastes better when you get past that one too.
I'm proud of you.  Just 100 miles away.

WAYTAGO WB!  I quit 5/20/92 - never had tobacco in any form ever since.  After the physical craving is gone - remember the psycho craving remains for years - always push it away.  Substitutes help - like sunflower seeds - there are some really good ones now - like David Ranch or Lime & Chili flavors.  Foods will taste better - the weight in your chest will go away.  No more hacking.  No more sinus problems.  The phlegm in your chest & airway will clear out.  No more house or car smelling like an ashtray - not to mention saving the money - more bling for your ride! REALLY worth it!  I quite when smokes were well under a buck - can't imagine the drain on the wallet nowadays.

Way to go Chuck,  I quit, should say my youngest daughter took them out of my shirt in the ER and tossed them in the waste basket.

I walked over, reached in to recovery them and met a broom full on in the face.

My daughter wasn't kidding, and she said quote, you reach for another pack or cigarette and I'll beat the crap out of you with this broom.

That was February, 1982, she was 7 years old at the time.  I think that figures up to 30 years next month.

Damn, that is a lot of $$$$$ saved.  30 years X 12 months X 30 day avg im a  month = 10,800 days X 3 packs a day X $3.45 a pack, = $111,780.   Jumpin jiminy whiskers, I'm rich and didn't know it.    Where be all that $$$$$$?   I must have enjoyed the hell out of it.

Quit a 4 pack a day addiction 3/1/2001. Bought my Valk, 3 nice used pickups, and a sweet BMW /M Roadster with the savings so far. They were $2.50 a pack when I got out but I saw them for $7.50 the other day so I'm giving myself a raise to buy even more toys. That's $30 a day the way I smoked! Best thing I ever did for myself and can't today imagine how I ever smoked. It seems like it must have been a different person...

The secret is in staying away from that FIRST puff. That's the one that gets us! Don't take that FIRST puff, one day at a time, and it is physically impossible for you to fail! Don't take that FIRST puff, just for today, and you are absolutely, positively, 100% guaranteed to go to bed a WINNER tonight.

If you need additional free support I highly suggest spending some time at www.quitnet.com

I think you are on the right path.

Cold Turkey is the way to go.

Everything else is just a Band Aid.

Or Patch.

Pretty soon in about 6 months Cigarette smoke will be repulsive to your senses.

I never have taken it up and they don';t bother me in the least to be around.

But exsmokers usually hate the smell of one after they kick the habit.

Prayers up for you fellah you deserve them.

You CAN do it. April 20 will be 10 years exactly since i laid down those nasty repulsive cr-you get the idea. I know all the X smokers on this board are pulling for you. I can smell a smoker LONG before i see them. The smell of smoke makes me sick now. To think i was actually inhaling it into my lungs!! You feel the urge-just don't do it. One minute one hour one day at a time WITHOUT a smoke. You know it's possible-look how many X smokers you have already heard from just on this board. Heres to a long smoke free life and RIDE SAFE.

Fantastic! Congratulations!

I believe that the key to staying quit is to change the way to see yourself. YOU ARE A NON-SMOKER! Not someone who is trying to quit smoking, but someone WHO DOES NOT SMOKE!

At least that worked for me. I stopped on May 18, 1982, midnight, after 15+ years of smoking. From that day on, I considered myself a non-smoker and haven't touched tobacco since.

Now if i could only get my dear wife to do the same....

Keep it going!!    After 25 years, I still sometimes dream I'm smoking again, and I'm very disappointed with myself in the dream. Angry Angry  When I wake, I have to think about if I'm a smoker or not. Undecided

It gets easier as time goes by.

Stick with it! cooldude cooldude

Been almost 7 years for me. I can't say that smoke makes me sick, actually I like second hand smoke, but that's another story.

I used nicotine patches which helped. The biggest thing I learned through the Ohio Quit Line (State set-up smoking cessation help) was that when you get those crazy cravings for a cigarette, just hold out for 8 minutes... 8 minutes is how long it takes for the craving to pass. It worked for me.

Good luck to everyone trying to quit. I won't preach the black-lung, heart disease angle. My quitting was like a financial windfall... to the tune of about $300/month. I mean, that's a car payment!

Some of the AA folks quit drinking 5 minutes at a time.  When that 5 minutes is up, tell yourself that it wasn't so tough and start on another 5 minutes.  It worked for me on smokes back in '82.  Of course, I had to fall back on that 5 minute trick from time to time for 2 or 3 years, but it does get easier.  The worst part of it all was that a beer and cigarette go together so well.  It does take WILL POWER, but well worth the effort in the long run...Jim  Smiley

I quit back in October so it has not been that long for me.  My wife quit cold turkey a little over a year ago, and I quit using the patch.  I have to disagree with the post that cold turkey is the only way to go, anything that helps you quit weather its the patch, cold turkey, or standing on your head, do what ever it takes to put them down.  I still have strong urges, dream about them almost every night, but luckily I always seem to dream my wife is B@tching at me for smoking so that helps at least in my dreams.  Its very hard but with willpower and support you can do it.

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

« Reply #32 on: January 19, 2012, 02:29:02 PM »

Congratulations!

I stopped back in 1990when my two year girl discovered that smoking was bad for your health and that some people died from it. First she (in very stern voice) told my wife and I to stop and stop now. We did.
(we had been meaning to already, but this pushed us to make it happen)

I have since learned that having a positive goal/outcome in mind is better than a negative one.
As an example don't stop because it can kill you, stop because you wish to live a higher quality life.

I just picked up a pack for friend yesterday while I was out. Smokes in victoria,bc, Canada now sell for $8.90 for 20 pack. WOW! They were $4 that last time I noticed.

Anyway, as others have said, it is a battle, one decision after another ....
Remember to have the positive image/outcome close by.

I'd say best of luck to you, but is not about luck.
It is about what you want for you.

Again, congratulation!

Be gentle with yourself, you are doing the right thing.

Congrats I quit 27 months ago after smoking 42 years.  Why I smoked 42 years I cannot understand. It was not that bad.  I quit cold turkey after trying with patch and Champix
