I'm planning on buying a new LCD TV soon.....I had planned on buying a 40-42" one to put in the living room and move the 32" one that's in there now into my office.....but, I may just get another 32" and leave the old one alone since I already have a home theater system set up on it.... Undecided

LED LCD TV's are basically just LCD's with LED lights for the backlighting....with the edge LED's being preferable I think?.....

I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra $$ for a 1080p versus a 720p resolution ...and a refresh rate of 120Hz versus a 60Hz?......I'm not into Gaming or most sports.....but if I were to buy a 1080p DVR, then I'd need the 1080p TV to get the best pic.......

Sam's Club has a 42" Viore 1080p LED LCD TV for $448.00....over a $100 cheaper than they sell at the Wal-marts..... ???....for the same TV.....

I just need to replace this old 27" clunker sitting in the office.....darn thing weighs a ton.... Cheesy

Your eyes would have to be pretty good and/or get pretty close to the screen to see a difference between 720p and 1080p on a 36" screen or smaller.
If you go to 42" and up then the pixels start to get large enough that you would be able to see the higher quality of the 1080p.

I'll guess you're not looking at this right now on a huge screen, but this will give you the idea...
Look at this image from even just a few feet away compared to getting your face real close to the monitor:

Here's a larger version:

Hope this helps.

i prefer plasma's over LCD's.  LCD TV's have a aura around moving images.  i haven't noticed that with our plasma.  plus plasma's are good in the basement 'cause they put out heat!!

Refresh rate .. higher the better... prevents blurring especially in fast moving scenes or sports and "lines/rings" in really dark scenes.... have a LCD Vizio 46" that got almost 7 years ago and never a problem..... I do get some blurring on fast scenes and gradient lines on really black/dark scenes sometimes but the refresh rate on this old TV is like under 40. but LCDs will most likely last longer than Plasma, use alot less power and wont "Burn through" or burn out pixels like plasmas can.....

And the newer LCDs weigh next to nothing compared with plasmas and even the old LCDs.... If you go big, 1080p is the only way to go..... the 50-60 inch LCDs weigh less than my old 46"..alot less...

have an LG  LED TV

Love the picture   Better than any plain LCD and from any angle
looked a long time before finally buying a flat screen

Also can watch youtube videos on it

think its 46"  120mhz 1080  the couch is maybe 6-8 feet from the tv so that is the best size
didnt need 55"

we have verizon fios here at home, looking from regular to HD channels you really can see the difference

Drink more and you will not notice the blurring! LOL   Seriously, I figured for the price difference of LED backlit over just LCD I could pull the shades closed and turn off the lights.  This was a couple yrs ago when price difference was more than now. Wait a couple months and todays technology will be old news and cheap as hell on blow out sale!  Wink

Have you looked at the 32" Samsung?  Check out the reviews /ratings of both the Samsung and the one you're considering......

I would definitely recommend SAMSUNG.

If you go with 32" then 720p is fine.

We have a 42" Hitachi 1080p in the living room and a 32" Samsung 720p in the bedroom.

The picture on the Samsung is EXCELLENT !

It is as good as or better than the 1080p Hitachi hands down.

If I were looking for another 42" or larger I would look for a 1080p Samsung.

The LED's do have slightly better picture quality but not enough to justify a huge price difference.

My laptop's LCD screen was recently replaced with a LED screen. The picture quality is slightly better.  It definitely stays cooler and don't run down the battery as quickly.

I have a Samsung 52 inch with the HD DVR hooked up with a HDMI cable running 1080p. I could never go back. If you are are sports fan you dont know what you are missing.
I got a cheapo Sceptre 46 inch for $400 for the kids for Christmas. I upgraded to a HD receiver and ran the HDMI cable it only does 1080i but is still impressive for the money,

They had a 80 inch LED at Costco the last time I was there $4600 worth. http://www.pcworld.com/article/247595/sharp_goes_big_with_80inch_3d_led_tv_at_ces.html

+1 On the Samsung, and 1080P on larger than 40-42 inch screens, cooldude

I would go for the larger size 42 to 47. I am using the same basic tv as you are thinking about for a computer monitor. I have the LG led lcd 32 in 1080/120 and am pretty close to the screen and I love it. There is no comparison to the regular lcds the leds seem to add to the clarity, brightness and uniformity of the colors. The higher resolution does definitely make a difference and some things look like your there. Mine also does 3d and I do have a blu ray player that does 3d but if you plan on that or any Blue ray then you do want the highest resolution available. Blue ray will indeed make use of the 1080p. I have surround sound with this and you become immersed in watching a movie. Avatar and pirates are great in this format and surround. What I have noticed that the clarity seems to translate into depth and when you are watching a movie especially Blue Ray or a HD tv then it makes all the difference in the world when you watch not only the sweat fall from a football players face but you see the edge of the drop. My own man cave so to speak can watch what I want while the wife watches HG tv.  Grin Grin

We supermonday'd this TCL teevee from Amazon for $250... I was going to mention
it since we like it so much, but I see the "normal" price is $379... for $379 I'd still be
watching the 20 inch tube teevee...  uglystupid2

well i bought a samsung plasma 51 inch..because of the 640 hz refresh rate..guess what? cable tv only puts out 60hz. and we never watch movies.. now if you have a blue ray player, get a plasma,, the plasma is also a lot higher wattage than the lcd..and weights a lot more too...

my next one will be a LED or LCD but go with samsung...

Best Buy usaually has the current models. Sam's club somethimes has models that are have been out longer. When you compare TVs different places be sure to check the actual model number so you do not buy a discontinued model.

We have an LG 47" 1080p 120 htz refresh rate. Mine was way more pricey than what you are looking at. I'm surprised no one has mentioned contrast ratio on better sets. I paid for higher contrast ratio, and the quality is worth the difference. Sounds to me like you mostly watch TV with some movies. stick to the 1080 on larger screens, get the fastest refresh rate you can at your price, and look at the contrast ratio. Higher numbers are best. OH, my set contrast ratio is 4 million to 1 cooldude

Look into the Sharp Aquos.  I have had a 65 for 4 years or so, and itis awesome.  Since then they have brought out the 4 color system, and the picture is unbeliveable.   Also if you are inclined, you can get it up to 80 inch.   Nothing like Football on a big screen.

I have an LG 47" with 240 refresh and its better than my son's 55" 3D. Look at the difference side by side in the store and pay the xtra few $$. Catch an HH Gregs mid week when they are empty and "negotiate with them until you get what you want.  cooldude
