I changed the vacuum hoses on my '98 Tourer today and decided to rebuild the petcock since I've been having some instances that seemed like fuel starvation.  Took apart the petcock and found a couple of tiny tears in the old diaphram.  Got it back together and remembered reading here that you have to test the petcock by drawing a vacuum on it to make sure it works.  So I attached a vacuum hose to the petcock and tried to draw a vacuum by mouth.  A few drops of fuel slowly dribbled out after a few tries.

My question is, how much fuel is supposed to come out when you're sucking on the vacuum hose till almost blue in the face?  Is a few drops good, or is it supposed to stream out?  Thanks for any answers.

The gasoline should stream out.

Might be it's back together incorrectly but I would check to be sure you have gas in the tank first.

I've got about 2 gallons of gas in the tank.  The tank is an I/S tank that I installed on my Tourer a few years ago.  I've got a diagram of the sequence of the petcock parts and took it apart and put it back together  a few times just to make sure its in the right order.  If fuel is supposed to stream out, then I guess its back to the drawing board!

I turned the petcock to On and to Reserve and got a few drops each time.

I made an aluminum plate and gasket and converted  both my valks to manual valves with Dan Marc electric shutoffs.  No vacuum lines.  Remember with a bad diaphragm fuel can leak into # 6 carb and cause a possible hydro.

For fuel to reach #6 cylinder via the vacuum hose you need 3 faults,
2 torn diaphragms and a plugged weep hole as well as the petcock being in the on or reserve position. Not impossible but very unlikely.

I have done that, draw a vac by mouth.  You should get a nice stream.

This thread is about modifying the petcock but has some great diagrams and photos that may help:
