this is a third party story about a guy parking his hybrid in the garage and forgetting to turn it off and it idled all night. the next morning his garage stunk! used to be in the old days you fire up your V-8 and idle for like ten minutes and you'd be dead (lost a buddy of mine like that, it was much quicker then I thought it would happen) I'm not going to knock hybrids like I am the eclectic electrics, the hybrids are selling like hot cakes especially pious's (prius) they are very ,very quiet (good for hunting wabbits) so quiet in fact that some folks walk out in front of them while video chatting  I suppose if a trucker can jump out of his truck and forget to set the parking brake because of extreme bladder pressure, then I guess it could happen this way  |

Any of the hybrids I have worked on, for A/C work, are a pain to keep running on the gas motor when charging the system. After less then 5 minutes they switch into the stand by mode. Most times we have to put them in gear with a driver in the seat to play with the gas pedal to keep the gas motor running. I doubt the motor would idle all night long ,unless the main battery was dead? But on todays cars anything might be possible given the right conditions.

I thought that was one way hybrids got such good mileage is that they don't "idle". Pull up to a stop sign or get stuck at a light, it shuts off until you press the gas. At least that's what I thought.
Forgetting a car running in the garage is no joke either. My wife's grandparents, in their upper 80's and probably shouldn't be driving anyways, did just that. Came home from church...pretty much the only place they go...pulled in and walked right into the house. Luckily their son stopped by later that day and found it. If they had gone to bed, that would have been the end of them.

I can't believe in this techno crazy world, they can't incorperate a c/o detector into a garage door opener, and if the level reaches a dangerous level, the detector goes off, it opens the garage door.
If that is an original idea, remember you heard it from me. LOL

But that would add $5 to the cost of the garage door opener that did it, making it less competitive with those that don't... |

Soon as you start you car it would go off. We have CO meter on the fire trucks and you stick it next to the exhaust it goes right off. Another FYI, dont put your CO detectors at the ceiling like you would your smoke detector. Pt it at the level of your living. Closer to the floor the better. CO is heavier then air. |

that's a disturbing little factoid, not sure I'd want to be a medical technician (or a doctor for that matter) a little knowledge can be too much |

Any hybrid I am aware of does not idle when in park. Most don't even start the motor until after 20 mph or more.
