Been wanting to hunt boar for a few years. Can use some tips as to where to go, laws, etc. Want to stay close to Ind.

Raised a wild Russian hog when I was a kid. Still wear the scar on my forehead from him. Boy he was tasty tho.  Evil

There is a Reality show on TV about people taking these hogs out of FL, GA, and a couple of other states.     Big ole boys also and they can tear up a field overnight.    They pretty much run in herds.

There is a couple of gals doing the capture(s) and I like watching them.    Too bad they weren't around when I needed a partner, or could of replaced my partner.

Don't get me wrong, I liked all of my partners, but my last one was the best.

She had to stand on her tiptoes and have all her pockets filled with sand to pass the requirements for height and weight, to get into the Academy.      Once she graduated from the Academy, I would hate like hell to meet her in a dark alley if I was looking for trouble.

Hey Fudgie... you can hunt them in Indiana.  they have them near Bedford.  South and east of town, near the river.

We're trying to find a place to hunt them.  If we do... you can come with us.

No season (meaning you can hunt them ANYTIME) with ANY weapon.

bullet placement is more important in hogs then deer, I got that from reading 5 minutes of this website. I've never hunted wild hogs, seen quite a few on the sides of the road as I roll by.

this guy claims to have bonafides

Sorry Rainman, I'm at work and got busy.  Undecided Cant make IZ. We leave for Sturgis the following week. I'd have trouble keeping a lid on Kit for that week of IZ anyway. She barely makes it a day in MI.

Yeah Gavin let me know what ya find out. I assume he lives in Ind? I was thinking spring time. Or at least before the sows have a litter.

Cannot help you with Indiana but my son and I have shot about a dozen of them when I lived in TX.  Shot them with pistols (.454 Casull and .500 Linebaugh) and rifles (7.62 x 39, .30-06, and 7x57 Mauser).  One shot kills on all of them that I can remember.  Texas is overrun with feral hogs; I have seen as many as 500 in one pasture.  When quail hunting in West Texas, one of my bird dogs pointed at thicket, and you can imagine my surprise when a 200 lb sow was flushed.  My 20ga with birdshot felt pretty wimpy at that moment but fortunately the sow ran the other way.

As far as eating, any size sow is great but the when boars exceed 100 lbs, they taste and smell like pi$$ and are not worth messing with.

Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking to it.   Grin

Is it legal to hunt them with belt-fed weapons?

If so, I may look into it myself.

In Turkey, the Turk military would take our brass out in our old Hueys, and hunt from the air, full auto.  Unfortunately, I was a mere captain.

You can hunt them here in indiana with anything. One guy even used a full auto .458 socom. No one wants them around here. The story is a hog farmer was going to lose his farm to the bank so he turned his 300 hogs lose and they became wild. It only takes 3 days for a domestic hog to start to turn wild when they are set free. If you have ever noticed hogs kept in pastures have longer hair than those kept in cages in barns. Just my 3 cents of usless information

Man, they seem to be thriving.  And must especially like Texas.

Sadly, I have no belt-fed weapons.  But I believe one of these would do nicely.

Yep they got more HOGS in Texas than any of you could kill in a life time. I have seen them and killed a few.

Largest bunch I ever saw was in the 60-70 #count and were from 3-4# piglets to 350+# Sows and 450+# Boars, most run around 150-250#

Real men use Dogs and handcuff to live catch and deliver to the butcher fresh.

With that thing, one shot one kill and your wasting hard earned money. You should be able to get 4-5 per shot if you line them up right. cooldude

Believe it or not but they are actually hard to kill here. Their shoulder blades are so thick it takes one hell of a bullet to break through to the vitals. Something like road kill posted would be ideal. Not sure what caliber that thing is looks like a 50 cal bmg round. If it is they wouldnt stand a chance. These hogs are not the same hogs that are in texas. They can get up to 6-700 pounds and have 8" tusk.

My front yard might be a good spot. This pic was taken from my front door(at my farm house) at a distance of about 50 yards.  We've got more than our share of the destructive little bastards.  Mostly feral, but the occasional Russian.... (See the one at top right)

Beautiful shot at the Russian ...You ever take one for the grill ? My friend Jerry goes down to West Tennessee to one of his old Air Force buddy's farm and bring's two or three back with him a few times a year. The small one's are good eating not sure about the big one's Jerry seems to prefer to shoot the small ones.Nice chunk of land out the front door you have I'd bet money you pee off the porch  cooldude

Thats a great point that did'nt cross my mind. I'm on the road everyday and in all my years I've only seen one road kill hog ( I-40 West near MM #311 just outside Crossville, Tennessee ). Crows are the same and I've never seen one of them dead on the road and they seem to play with fast moving traffic feeding around other road kill.

I killed a boar years ago in Tennessee. The hunt was a graduation present for my son Joe. It was the worst tasting meat I've ever had the misfortune to try. I'd love to hunt them again some time, but as I'm older and fatter I'd prefer hunting them on flatter ground.  Embarrassed

I'd probably shoot a sow this time too unless I was just shooting them to help the landowner out.
