Ad in local paper for 2007 Trumph Rocket lll with windshield, bags. 4,467 miles. $7,500 or best offer. Does not specify if it is a touring model. I need another bike like I need another hole in my head. Already have three. I have wanted one of these since they came out. Please tell me I need to buy this Rocket. I think I will call tomorrow and see if he still has it.  |

Avoid it if it hasn't had the factory "update kit" to correct all the known issues with the motor. My new Rocket ('07) had the engine pulled twice (actually they pull the bike off the motor) in only 2000 miles to have major engine work done with an out of pocket cost of over $3600 and over 21 weeks in the shop. Triumph definitely did not step up to the plate on this warranty and factory defect issue.
If you go to the Rocket forum websites you'll read quite a few horror stories for model year '08 and earlier.
Caveat Emptor....just saying.

I rode one of the old ones, I don't want it... I just don't think I could get used to the position of the controls, or the lack of foot pegs. I would be afraid to ride one of the newer ones, though  ... the Rocket Roadster...  I think most of the problems of the early ones are fixed... ? -Mike |

I know a guy that had the first year of the touring model. Within the first 10K miles the transmission went to crap. It was covered by warranty, but he sold it and bought a Valk instead. It also went through rear tires every 5K miles from what he said.

Most new triumphs are really good quality and cheaper than most Euro and Jap stuff (at least they are over here) ...but the Rocket is deeply unpopular with two separate mechanics I know - they work on them all the time and don;t rate them.... Which is significant I think. One is a Triumph main dealer. |

WTH happened? Had to split the case (twice) to go after transmission problem. Bike wouldn't stay in first gear under any load. As soon as you cracked the throttle it would jump out of gear. It's hard to sell or ride a bike that can't stay in first, so I had to sink money into it. Triumph paid for parts and half the labor the first time and nothing the second, even though it only had 40 miles on it (only 1950 total original miles) before it started doing the same thing. Not sure what I will end up doing with the bike as I have lost confidence in its long-term reliability...but I have so much invested I would at least like to get some use out of it. Had a friend ride the bike home this fall after the repair and it has been parked since then...and it now has a little over 2000 original miles. It looks like the problem was an out of spec washer (too thin) associated with first gear that the original Triumph shop that installed the update kit missed. Most have had problems with staying in second gear and lots of broken clutch lifters...achilles heel of this bike. There were a lot of people having issues with output bearings installed backwards at the factory and early failure, bad cam chain tensioners, faulty fuel gauges, ignition wiring failures, etc. There's really no machine as reliable as the Valkyrie as long as the periodic maintenance on the final drive is performed properly. |

I have an 05 Rocket III that I bought used in 06. Love it for the power, like the Valk Interstate better for two up and long trips. I took mine to the dealer to get it checked for the supposed problem and they couldn't find anything wrong. I have not had any problems at all other than it ate rear tires. I put a 225/60-16 Bridgestone car tire on it and it works great. I had a 97 Tourer that I sold when I bought the Rocket, I had a new hot rod.!!!

The local dealer is my friend and he loaned my his 2010 Rocket III with 20,000 miles on it. I kept it for a weekend and put 900 miles on it with no problems at all. My friend told me that some of the early ones were a pain in the butt and the new ones were just great.
One thing is for sure, the darn thing is fast with incredible torque from way down slow. I loved it and may just buy a new 2012 when and if he has one to sell. He claims to have his total allocation for this year sold in advance. He also is the best mechanic I have ever used, he has performed miracles on my preWWII Rolls Phantom III and I really think he would not lie to me.
I just topped 100,000 miles on my 03 Standard and I sill love it, its probably wrong, but, with this many miles mostly two up and lots of them pulling a heavy trailer, I'm just getting scared that someday it will leave me on the side of the road a thousand miles from hom.
I bought the 7 year extended warranty with unlimited mileage and never had to use it.
PLEASE Mr. Honda, build more valks with the new 1800 fuel injected motor and don't make it look like a Rune. If it looked just like my 03 Standard it would be okay with me. I do know that I'd like to have the 1800 motor. I promise, I'll buy one today.
