Dodge Dakota 4X4 auto ...Over-drive

I bought a Dodge Dakota 4X4 with 318 engine and auto transmission back in the summer. It's a 1993 thats in great condition and has been taken very good care of however it sucks gas like a nitro powered funny car getting around 12 mpg. Today I noticed that when I hit the over-drive switch it does'nt change the transmission and the truck seems to be geared very low. My question does the over-drive just plug in to the transmission or is it inside the transmission ? Could a fuse cause this ( the light comes on when you push the button. ) Any suggestion's ?

Thanks Ian I've been down with the flu the last few days I'll check out those fuses when I get to feeling better.
