Ok, it happened, the only gear that I see with broken teeth is the one attached to the rear case. I guess the engine will have to be removed for the fix. Any suggestions, tips, help or encouragement will be appreciated.
Thanks

Ther seems to be a lot of this going around. The first thing everyone who owns a Valk should do is install a fuel filter as the screen at the petcock does a poor job of keeping the crap out of the carbs. That being said get rid of that junk OEM petcock and replace it with an aftermarket unit of your choice. And to avoid the problem of forgetting to turn off the gas install a Danmark electric fu :cooldude:el valve.Do all these things and you'll never have a hydrolock.

I am fixing the exact same thing right now. same gear too. yes, pull the motor. you will need basic tools and 3 big sockets, you will need a 32mm to get the nut off of the clutch. once that is out then a big daddy comes in to play, a 46mm 12pt deep socket ( http://tools.ntxtools.com/search/index?query=GPC-3146MD&x=0&y=0 ) honda will try and charge you $100 for this part.  You will use a 36mm 12pt deep socket to get the nut off of the output shaft. here is the new gear that you need, the cheapest oem i coulf find ( http://www.indyoem.com/ecbasket.asp?fveh=3466&section=148074&year=1998&make=HONDA&model=GL1500C&category=MOTORCYCLES&sid=03978998X2K4K2012J3I21I31JPMQ5575R0 ). to fix this problem i bought a pingel petcock, dan marc fuel shut off, new float valves, and golan mini filter (10 mircon filtration) for the problem  for me i also bought #38 jets and a dynojet needle kit, figured might as well since the carbs were off i want more power  and i have cobra 6 X 6 exhaust  good luck

If you are going to use a DanMarc fuel shutoff then save some money and use the oem petcock and just do the modification to it that Gryphon Rider wrote about a couple of weeks back.
