You may have to pull it off the spline and raise it a tooth.
Do you have running boards or standard footpegs?

Agree on the spline adjustment. Honda sold a cb1100xx which has a shifter which fits on a Valk and moves the peg out and up a bit. Do a search for alternate shifters.

Cut the shifter off and drill a hole in the arm. Then you can choose what you want to mount.

Like Davred said. Harley has many different pegs available. I chose one that is about 3/4 in longer and I think has a 3/8 thread. Remove the shifter cut off the old peg grind flat and drill and tap to the size required for the peg you purchase. Loctite it on.

If you get down low and get a good look, there are two places to make a little adjustment. I had to make adjustments at both points after adding wing boards and lowering them. Just make sure the shifter doesn't hit the valve cover when up shifting.

Could you explain in a little bit more detail for this old soldier? Thank you. My shifter, you took the bolt out and pulled the shifter off. Raised it up a tooth or two and put it back on. Later on I did get a ST1000 I think it was. It set the rubber foot out to the outside a little more, however, I'm using mine with a Kickshifter from Chet's, and Cobra floorboards.

...very awkward shifting peg with my boots on.....way too small and not enought clearance... Had the same problem with mine. I have floorboards. I tried a number of adjustments on the splines but could never get it comfortable. To me it was just too far under the head. So eventually I removed the shifter and made two bends in it. One where the flat bar welds to the spline mounting, bent to the outside, the next at the other end at the rubber, pretty much bent it so the peg is back to perpendicular to the bike again. This moved the shifter away from the bike about an inch. Works well. If I was to do it again I think I'd do what others said and cut the peg off (where the rubber mounts), drill a hole to mount a bolt. This way you could mount any length of bolt and adjusted to fit you. Reinstall the rubber on the end, cover the rest of the bolt with gas/vacuum hose and nobody would know the difference.

I replaced my shifter with a shifter from a CBR1100XX. I believe there are other references to this on the forum already. I originally found information on this page: http://www.qsl.net/w5cgh/valkyrie.htmlWhen I first got my bike, the first thing I notice is that the shifter felt very cramped with my motorcycle boots on. Now, when I ride, I no longer have to make an effort to get my foot under the shifter, the shifter is above my boot, my feet are flat footed on the pegs, and the shifter is out from under the valve covers enough that I can easily down shift. Because of the location of the bolt holding the shifter on, it is necessary to remove the engine guard to get it mounted. The extra inch of length does increase the travel required to shift just a bit. To adjust for the added length, I now tend to put the shifter about mid foot and lift my foot rather than just lift my toes. For me, this actually made my bike shift better. I ordered the shifter, the rubber pad, and the bolt from one of the Honda OEM part sites. I think it came to about $35.

I find the stock shifter akward with my riding boots and would like to try something different

I just ordered all three parts this morning from HDL. It was like $48 shipped I think it will work better with the cobra floorboards than the stock shifter

What you will find is a heel toe shifter works best with floorboards.... but I suppose the longer shifter will be OK with boards if your feet are not too large (no insult intended here).

The MC enterprises heel-toe shifter (with boards) as a kit is made to mate with the stock shifter..... I do not know, but it seems unlikely it would work with the CBR shifter.

Had the Kurakyn Heel Toe Shifter with the cobra floorboards, and did not like the set up. Sold the heel toe shifter, and am going to try the CBR1100XX Blackbird Shifter

jmann,
The CBR1100XX shifter does not require any modification.
custom1,
I see that both shifters use the same 6x20 bolt as well. I just checked and the length appears to be the same on both. The same bolt should work. The bolt for the CBR1100XX shifter came chromed and had a smaller 8mm head instead of the 10mm on the valkyrie shifter.
The shifter itself appears to be made of cast aluminum.

Thanks al v. I will check bone yards in my area to see if I can find a used shifter. If I can't find one DL will be my choice.

The MC enterprises heel-toe shifter (with boards) as a kit is made to mate with the stock shifter..... I do not know, but it seems unlikely it would work with the CBR shifter. I think this thread sort of split into two directions. The solution I was speaking of was this post. http://www.qsl.net/w5cgh/valkyrie.htmlI took off the heel toe (just can't get used to shifting with my heel) and kept the floorboards, but then have trouble using boots with the stock shifter. Just like the photos in the above post. If you adjust it up to get your foot under it easy, then there is not enough room between the shifter and head to down shift. I'm not trying to use the heel toe with the CBR shifter. No insult taken about the foot size. They are 11-11.5 or maybe a 12 if made in china. Thanks al v for the info on the bolt. Have you tried the new shifter yet? What do you think about it? I think I need some feedback before I spend the money to experiment.

custom1,
I am currently using the CBR1100XX shifter. I like it. I wear size 10 motorcycle boots that have an extra piece of wear protection leather on top for the shifter making them even taller. I am using the stock pegs. My boot fits flat footed on the peg with a bit of room to spare to get under the shifter. Adjusting 1 spline at a time makes for about 1 inch change in the shifter peg location. There was only one position that would work for me and it is pretty much perfect. I have to lift my boot slight to make initial contact with the shifter.
