AM I GETTING HYDRO LOCK???
«

recently removed the tank for air cleaner maintenance (k&n). Now sometimes the starter hangs. I thought it was the button going bad. Is this hydro lock??? and if so...what can i do to fix it before i screw something up??
its a 98 standard. original petcock as far as i can tell.

at the very least I would install a fuel filter and service the petcock.

Before you start throwing money at your bike have you looked at Shoptalk ? It's at the top of the page. The Valks are known for starter button problems. There is a button maintenance the solves most problems. Is your battery in good shape ? Starter relay ?

Hydrolock either you got it or not.You get it an its already too late ,once the cylinders get gas or water in them an the engine hits the liquid it is going to stop an there goes the starter gears. You probably have a switch problem but it is a good idea to replace the petcock or alter it to make it a manual valve an ALWAYS turn it off.I removed the diaphram a long time ago an now have a manual valve,no guessing it's on or off

Sounds like the starter button or a dead spot in the starter motor. I don't think hydro-lock typically fixes itself that easily. I may be having the same issue you are.

There is no mistaking the 'CLANK' of the dreaded fuel-lock.. You're most likely experiencing a starter button problem and it may need cleaning..

In order for hydro-lock to occur the starter has to start moving the insides of the engine. No noise at all from the starter is not hydro-lock.

thanks....it does appear to be a button problem. its like it doesnt always make a good contact when i press it. usually have to press hard or roll my thumb over the button before it'll actually begin turning the motor over.
