I bought some very used Leatherlyke bags recently through the classifieds only to be disappointed in their overall condition. Someone had used red paint and tried to paint each stud with a not-to-steady-hand. They had been hard baked in the sun and looked their age.

I decided to paint the bags black, studs and all. I removed the hardware  and  wiped the bags down with acetone. The acetone is a solvent for the plastic used in these bags. However, a quick wipe readily takes off the oxidized surface and easily prepared the surface to accept paint. The textured "leather like" factory surface wasn't diminished to speak of. I masked where necessary and sprayed the bags using Rustoleum textured black paint for plastics. After several coats I wet sanded very lightly with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper to take some of the roughness of the textured paint away. I didn't clear coat the finish because I'd like to be able to easily touch up the bags in the future when necessary.

I then ordered Interstate trunk lettering to finish off this project. It was meant to be placed on a curved surface so the lettering has to be adjusted to level before it can be placed on the bags. This was easily done on the workbench using the peel-paper edges as a guide.

I'm real pleased with the overall project. I'm happy that I didn't pay very much for the bags and there's no way to tell that they've been rattle canned.

By the way, where did you get those spark plug wires? That's also a nice touch!  I'd like to get a set in red. cooldude

My wires are Accel. They're 7mm so that I could reuse the OEM resistor spark plug boots. They're only available in blue or yellow.

However, if you want red this link is for bulk 7mm solid core transparent red wire. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Red-7mm-Solid-Core-Spark-Plug-Wire,5117.html

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll pass then as I never had any luck in making my own wires. As you can see by my sig the trike is red & white so blue or yellow really wouldn't work.

Thanks again  Wink
