I don't have a problem with shooting the computer as a disciplinary action.  Posting it on-line and humiliating/embarrassing your kid in front of millions of people on the internet is unconscionable.

What a jerkoff. "I'm gonna correct my daughter's attention-whoring activities by posting an attention whoring video of myself on the internet complaining about her then shooting her computer".   Roll Eyes

Handle it in-house. If you have any parenting skills then that's what you'll do. I can see exactly where his daughter gets her behavior from. Lead by example.

Neither is right. I don't think anyone here is saying that's okay either. But one display of poor behavior should not be mimicked as a retaliatory action by the people who are supposed to be setting the example.

Sorry dood, but the guy is an asshat and his daughter may very well have learned this kind of behavior from him. Reap what you sow.

Do you actually HAVE kids Junior?

A family psychologist would have been a better investment than the software upgrade.

Not exactly leading by example in my book  Poetic justice up till shooting the inanimate object

I understand it, I've raised 3 kids, grounded them at various points  The father will one day
regret his video and I sure hope his daughter learns some lessons from its posting

She needs counselling ASAP now   Dad also

But to my knowledge I never belittle a child in front of their friends but deal with
stuff PRIVATELY, (like I use PM and not general post)

Where does all the anger on both sides come from?  I see so much anger everyday
in court and on the street.

A tragedy on every level but I am sure it is one repeated in many households

I agree Al, it was a nice grouping of shots,  hope his daughter does not have access to her own firearms

I am thankful my parents are still alive and that I have the opportunity
to help them with chores.

I wonder if one day that girl will ever feel the same way

I applaud him for disciplining his daughter, but he went about it the wrong way.  All he did was give more ammunition (no pun intended) to the anti-gun folks.  And yes Al, raise a flag at CPS, they'll be watching him at the very least, if not trying to make an example of him.  Nothing like airing your dirty laundry in public.

A shotgun would have made better show. I'd have chunks flying.
I pulled my daughter over while she was driving and smashed her cell phone in the middle of the road. She was sure I wouldn't, but I did. I always told my kids I wouldn't lie to them, so If I say "if we see one more $300 cell phone bill I'll smash that dam thing into a million pieces" I have to do it. The high bills were my fault though because i would pay for unlimited texting  Roll Eyes

well lets see now,
if you ground your kids, that will accomplish nothing, just make them more angry at you.
if you bust their ass you got CPS on yours. and the kids will kill you.
if you take away their toys, thats cruelty.

I raised 4, 3 boys and a girl.
the girl is a chemist at Dow, i musta done something right
youngest boy, is a mechanic at Dow and races sprint cars like his dad did. I musta done something right.
the middle boy is a druggie, I tried everything, even the military kicked him out..
the oldest boy is doing great with a job and a family,,,

so bottom line is, i think the guy handled it the best way he knew how,, we will probably not know if it worked out for him.
you are not in his shoes and have no clue about his daughter so you cannot judge.

if i was to raise my kids in todays ways. i would be in jail,, o BTW my kids still love me,, or at least they say they do...

I showed the clip and the thread to my 23 yr old. She is the "well adjusted middle child"
and at 15 could have been that girl, She lives home and works nearby. She comes and goes and
frankly her mom is at her wits end sometimes with her. We have a different relationship and
I am greatful for that

I asked her what she thought

She thought that the girl was probably depressed and had low self worth and was trying
to make herself bigger by making her folks smaller.

She then thanked me for never calling her down in front of her friends (or the people
who she thought were her friends) but pulling her aside either then or later and
explaining consequences of what was happening or what I thought may be happening

Frankly when she was 15 I had my doubts, she was doing terribly in school, would get calls from the law,and I made trips to the police station and court, we tried for years but couldnt get her help from the school district for her learning and processing issues but she always had one job and always
did her chores  We gave them chores as soon as they could understand them.

Then she said I love you dad and gave me a hug  She is NOT a hugger

I wish one day that father can have such a moment

In fact I wish all of you dads the same

At least he was trying to teach her a lesson. His child apparently did not come with an instruction manual and a parenting hand book like all the critics children must have! I'm sure he regrets some of his reaction and we all know hindsight is 20/20. I probably would have done worse and turned into my own father if I were in his shoes, but playing monday morning quarterback,I can come up with all kinds of better plans.

I think he went over the top but posting it on her facebook was justifiable in my book (fight fire with fire).
I love shooting inanimate objects (especially expensive ones) to let off steam but would not want the kid to see it done out of anger. A short rebuttal and "YOU ARE GROUNDED" would have probably been enough.   But that is easy for me to say,not knowing what it's like to be him (or HER) and after the fact.

so bottom line is, i think the guy handled it the best way he knew how,

Which is why some people just shouldn't have kids. That's not the way to handle it and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know this. You do not combat immaturity with more immaturity.

BTW, we're only getting one side of the story here. I know it's a crazy concept but parents are not always right or good. Maybe he IS a monster and judging by his reaction I'm inclined to give the daughter's POV some credibility.

I think the whole thing is one big 'ol reality tv fueled fake.

Soon he will be showing up on the Today Show and him and his daughter will have it out on Dr. Phil.... the cash will start rolling in.

Just another set of attention whores. And we are all fueling that fire.

Oss, you did something for your child at which some of us haven't done so well.  I once heard someone say the best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother.

Choices have consequences, and many of those consequences spill over into the lives of those who need us most.  The girl referred to in the video didn't arrive where she's at overnight and the reasons for her anger are likely not what she says they are.

I have eight children.  They are all products of broken homes.  By God's grace they are for the most part living productive lives.  A couple are still struggling, but they'll get there.

Of all the regrets I have, and I have many, the one that haunts me the most is wishing I had been a better father.  I suspect the dad in the video may have similar regrets when he gets to be my age.

You've done a good job, Oss.

we agree again Mr. Anvil

shoot the laptop if you need to/ the situation warrants it, but for crying out loud don't post a video! tickedoff

Great minds Wink

Curious mentality displayed Mr. Rootinest-tootinest, at one point he tells his daughter that she's gonna have to reimburse him for the ammo. Really? I could have accomplished the job with a rock, which is free. Gives you some insight into this guy's crippled brain. Why should someone else pay for his waste and poor decision making ability? Again, where do you think she gets it?

I got a beating when my stepdad overhead me saying I had to ask my ole man for permission to stay out. I am this guy took it out on the computer.  He could have done a dozen things different. But he took the path he took and I am not going to fault him. He wrote a note to all media that he and his family is NOT available for furthur comment.

IF you really listened she had done something similar and apparently the punishment made no impression. She posted the nasty letter on Facebook.  Too many people still think the internet is private.  I do not post anything that would cause me or my family to be harmed. I just did some resume reviews and frankly some of the stuff some people post lets me know they would not fit well in the company I hire for. Some law enforcement department are requesting your password for your on-line account.
Three thing to listen to on the tape, daughter calls a woman a cleaning lady, said she had to clean the clinic. Father says the lady trades cleaning for services. How many persons that have clinics allow a patient or pet/livestock owner to work off thier bill? Yet to the daughter, she is just a cleaning lady. Least that is the feeling I get from the letter the father read.

Friend of mine was threatened with CPS call from her teenage daughter. She went to the closet and started packing her a bag. The daughter started crying and aplogized. Didn't solve all the problems, but the daughter picked her words carefully after that.
Still pretty cool shooting the laptop.

He could have just unplugged the wireless router.

Anyway he did what he thought was best - at the time. She went public with her rant so responded publicly as well. Mature? Compassionate? Maybe not. No matter it's been done. Sometimes kids need a shock. I think he shocked her. He tried punishing in normal ways. This time he blew her mind.
As long as they both eventually come around to save the relationship that's all that matters.
Someday she'll be telling her kids about what 'Grandpa' did when she stepped out of line and it will just be a funny story by then.

It wouldn't have blown my mind. I'd have just thought he was the tool I described him as in my letter. Thing is, now all my friends (and their parents and everyone else) know I wasn't lying.

He's a man-child, or maybe child-man is more appropriate. He responded like a butt-hurt, attentions starved child. You can fault a full-grown parent for that.

The father was really hurt about what the daughter said about him and the daughter like all kids thinks things grow on trees and is upset about chores. The father had warned the girl not to do this before and Im sure was at a loss on what to do, but coupled with the lack of appreciation and hurt he felt found a way to express himself. Being in IT the computer didnt really mean that much to the guy either. I agree keep it in the family anything taken public will be looked upon with different views and nothing good comes with airing this kind of thing. Im sure that both the father and daughter will learn some lessons from this encounter. Both sound as they have soft hearts.
