My buddy and I celebrated our 50th birthdays together, born 21 days and 21 miles apart, with a ride to Leggett and the Drive Thru Tree.

Cafe stop just south of Willits and north of Ukiah on Hwy 101.

The Chandler Tree. $3 is worth the photo opp

Our Bikes inside the Tree

The Gift Shop

The thing is still alive

This was off to the side?

Log Wagon from days gone bye.

Then we headed down Hwy 1 south west to Ft Bragg, one of our favorite stops for a burger at Jennys Giant Burgers. The ride was better than the burger.

Still "alive" . . . ? Redwood trees; can't hardly kill'em. As long as there is a root intact it will stay alive. The souvenir shops sell little knarley chunks of growth cut from green logs. Lay them in a pan of water and they'll sprout new shoots. Your very own little redwood forest.

Damn big tree.

Good night when that thing falls in about a 1000 years, it will make a big boom.

Surprised they would let people build a road thru that old tree.

What a hoot.

Alright, here's my "big tree" story.....

My grandfather worked on the CPR (Canadian pacific railroad) and was told about the great Sequoia’s in California.  After working on the railroad he had to return home to Italy because WWII was getting all heated up and he was deported because of it.  he told my father about the tree's and said that he wasn't able to see them for himself, and that he had seen pictures of 'em but couldn't imagine how huge they were.  After the war he worked hard to send the family over.  many of my uncles had gotten jobs with the CPR, my father worked for the railroad for six months and hated it!!  sadly my grandfather never was able to come to America and he died without ever seeing the trees he heard so much about and that he wanted so badly to see..

a couple of years before my father’s death, we took a ride to visit my parents in phoenix, where we also planned to go to Disney land, then up to "Kings Canyon" to see the trees.  we were amazed at the incredible size of those things!!  We’re talking 23' in diameter, that’s about the size of a two car garage!!  my father told me of the stories his father told him about the tree's, but he thought that it was all a lie.  he was gladly proven wrong, it was probably the best "family" trip we ever took.

I have a feeling the grove Alph refers to is the Caleveras Big Trees State Park on CA. Hwy 4. The Sequoia Redwood is larger in diameter, but does not get as tall as the coast redwood.
FB... what is your travel itinerary for the SPYDER run in the Redwoods. Maybe we can share a few miles while you are in this neck of woods. Hwy 254 is the Avenue of Giants. It is the old Hiway that now parallels the freeway (Hwy 101). You find the northbound beginning of the "Avenue" north Garberville, which is north of Leggett. Further north of Eureka on 101 is Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. A few miles north of Orick take the old hwy going north through the State park for 8 or 9 miles. Takes you through more of what the Avenue of the Giants has to offer. Puts you back on the Hwy 101 as you continue to transit north. Been around these parts for nearly 40 years. Let me know if you have questions.  sheets
