First, it's a filthy mess, but elbow grease is cheap. My main concern right now is pulling the rear case cover....it appears I have to pull the clutch. Is that right? If so, I would have to invest in some sockets/tools I hopefully won't need more than this one time. At this point, all I want to do is get it up and running and I do have access to a good engine for that purpose. Right now, I think fixing the old one is going to take more time than I want to invest at the moment, although I don't have a problem working on it. I even have all the internal parts to fix it, just need the rear cover. Guess I could sell it "as-is" along with the repair parts an let someone else work on it....about 30k on it.

Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated. In the mean time....where did I put that new can of elbow grease, I know it's around here somewhere.

Check out that air filter.  Angry  As for cleaning the wheels, I'm thinking of having them glass beaded or similar. Sure would save a lot of time if not too pricey. I have nearly all the parts needed to give it new life; lenses, shocks, pipes, etc. Notice only one tooth left on the starter gear. At first I thought there was a lot of debris in there but later inspections revealed it's just a bunch of broken teeth laying on the bottom. The rest of the bike, just elbow grease.

Even though there are a ton of metal pieces inside from the hydrolock I would be willing to bet the gears and starter, with the possibility of maybe some overheated wiring is all that might be wrong with the motor..if it can't run, it won't pump trash through the system..
I have to admit that is one rough looking motorcycle but I hear that overpriced elbow grease works wonders. Good luck to ya..

I just fixed the exact same two days ago. same gear too minus your started gear. yes, pull the motor. you will need basic tools and 3 big sockets, you will need a 32mm to get the nut off of the clutch. once that is out then a big daddy comes in to play, a 46mm 12pt deep socket ( http://tools.ntxtools.com/search/index?query=GPC-3146MD&x=0&y=0 ) honda will try and charge you $100 for this part.  You will use a 36mm 12pt deep socket to get the nut off of the output shaft. here is the new gear that you need, the cheapest oem i coulf find ( http://www.indyoem.com/ecbasket.asp?fveh=3466&section=148074&year=1998&make=HONDA&model=GL1500C&category=MOTORCYCLES&sid=03978998X2K4K2012J3I21I31JPMQ5575R0 ). to fix this problem i bought a pingel petcock, dan marc fuel shut off, new float valves, and golan mini filter (10 mircon filtration) for the problem  for me i also bought #38 jets and a dynojet needle kit, figured might as well since the carbs were off i want more power  and i have cobra 6 X 6 exhaust  good luck

Where are you located in southern Louisiana?  I was just out there to visit my daughter in Lutcher, she and her hubby are teachers locally there.
