Best of Gilligan and Navigator --- July 11, 2003

This was the 35th day of our 57-day trip through the Northwest, roughly following The Lewis and Clark Trail.

56 degrees at 7 AM --- 96 degrees at 5 PM
120 miles

We started our ride going west to east on the “Going to the Sun” Road in Glacier National Park before it was completely light.  In the partial darkness, the ride was scary because the shadows emphasized the steep drop-offs from the road, which had little in the way of guardrails.  The views of the valleys, waterfalls and mountains were breath-taking.  At Logan Pass we hiked 3 miles round trip to Hidden Lake on Mt. Clements through knee-deep snow and slush.  The elevation went from 6,646 feet to over 7,100 feet along the Continental Divide.  At this location, the divide is actually a triple divide, with water going to the Mississippi, Columbia and Hudson rivers.  We saw a gray wolf from a distance, deer, marmots, and even mountain goats we could almost touch.  With the views of the mountains, valleys, snow, wildflowers, lake and animals, we call this our “Sound of Music” experience.  We rode further east and took another 3-mile round trip hike to St. Mary Falls and Virginia Falls.  While both were beautiful, Virginia Falls was on rock cliffs on which you could walk.  It was another breath-taking experience.  We then rode to the eastern end of the park and turned around to ride back to the west end and to take in the sights in full daylight.  As we rode through Apgar Village to return to our motel, we saw a large black bear.

cooldude Yes, spectacular!  did that trip last summer and the Going to the Sun was one of many highlights.  Coming down from Logan Pass (E to W) they were holding up traffic at the top as it was one lane due to construction for about ten miles.  My buddy and I went to the front of the line and came down the entire way without oncoming traffic for a long time.  Great, but they were watering the road to keep down dust and I was washing off volcanic ash for weeks. . .

Thanks for posting the pics.  I always enjoy your trips with you when you do.  How's the Prius doing?  My 98 has around 70,000 miles on it now.  I usually get around 50 mpg travelling to and from work doing 55-60.  Looks like gasoline may be headed up in price because they said so on t.v.

Our Prius is averaging over 48 mpg with mostly city driving.  We haven't done as much long-distance traveling in it as we intended.  Yeah, the news did say gas was going up to the highest levels yet.  We're very glad to have the Prius.

Love Glacer,  back in the 70s  I did the highway in a motor home pulling a trailer loaded up with a Land Cruiser station wagon.  Dont think they  will permit that now.  Was going North to Alaska, and was one of the highlights of the trip.

Hey, Popeye, It's good to "hear" your voice again.  We're doing well.  Navigator is now a 5-year survivor with no indication of recurrence.  We hope you are doing well also.  "Ride Safe," old friend.

Good to hear from you again.  Great pics.  I'm glad Navigator is doing very well.

I no longer have the Valkyrie or the Miata.  I sold my home to my son and moved into an apartment but I'm still riding (a Vstrom)

Thanks again for posting those great pictures. cooldude

Gilligan!!!!!  thanks for the pictures!!!!!!  FB and I went to Glacier in early June a few years back.... and we couldn't make it all the way through.  The roads were still iced up and the gates were closed about 1/3 of the way in.  We are planning to go back through this August!!!!!!
Can't wait to see what we missed in person!
Thanks!!!!
