This is what we use on the wife's trike:

All of it is Rivco stuff:

Small Quick Detach Rack for all Motorcycles with Trailer Hitches (11"x16")
http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=36

Waterproof Rack Bag
http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=361&cat=399&page=1

Rack Bag Dowel Lock Rods
http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=362&cat=356&page=2

I use a small cargo net and cover the whole bag with it to add to the Dowel Rod Lock system. Comes with an attached rain cover, etc. It works really well on the trike for weekend trips etc. For my Interstate and pretty much all the regular (non-trike) Valks, the bag will cover your turn signals and license plate. I added a small LED strip to the back of the rack that plugs into my 4 -way trailer plug. It has a brake/tail and turn signal combo in it. That really added to the price though.

When we arrive at our destination(s), I simply pull the two cotter pins that hold the entire rack/bag to the trailer hitch and carry the bag and the rack itself into the hotel room. No muss, no fuss (other than pulling the cargo net off).

It is a tad pricey all together, but it is quality stuff that works very well together. I am very happy with the set-up and would buy it again.

I made mine. Bought the 2' of sq tubing and a 16" sq pc of diamond plate. Bolted the plate to the tubing. Less then $10.

Here's another "home made" rack. (It was my neighbors home). Works great!

I went through a bunch of options, and settled on this....

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=atv+cargo+carrier&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=5458478775108228446&sa=X&ei=cRE5T_3TNdS2twfrsJyZAg&ved=0CJEBEPMCMAA

The Rivco seemed to small to be really useful.  11x16?  I personally didn't feel it would hold enough stuff for extended trips.

Now the above mentioned product is 20x36.  Yes, it is big.  Is it too big??  I don't know as I"ve not used it yet.  It has a "crooked" mount, so it will raise up several inches from the receiver.  I plan to get some lights wired to it, and hopefully it will work fine.  I"ll post some pictures when I have it, (or atleast try it)...

I don't have a receiver hitch, just the ball.  I did get a Rivco carrier which has the bracket that mounts under the ball (is held on by the hitch ball) and the rack slides into the bracket.  With the trailer I have I only used the Rivco carrier once, and don't use the trailer that much either.

A couple of questions for those that use these.

1) Any effect on handling with weight that far back (I realize it's low down). I would think it would affect   turning/handling being so far back, but I don't know.
2) Any issues with LEOs on blocking the license plate.

Thanks.

No issue with handling, but I guess if you had it loaded with some very heavy stuff, it very well could. I would imagine higher up the handling would be an issue.

As for the license plate blockage..... I guess it could be cause for LEO hassle, but I always thought about making a copy of my plate and laminating it to stick to the box/bag etc that might be blocking my plate.  Never had the problem tho.

Looking at the instruction for the hitch attachment, it mentions not to use this with an "un-sprung" hitch. What are they referring to?

Unsprung is if the hitch is attached below the shocks, i.e., it is a rigid mount. too much shock and vibration could do some damage.

Thanks for the definition.  cooldude I'll have to look under the trike to see how the hitch is attached.

Last time I used it, I had a loaded cooler and a gallon of gas. I couldn't tell it was back there.

When I use it, I'll spend a whole five minutes and move the license plate to the rack. (just for peace of mind.) I also added turn signals since my cooler blocks em.

The original one I had made by a wing site was heavy. You put it on and could tell the bike moved a little thats why I went with the aluminum diamond plate. Down on your knees you cannot see the plates/ turns. But up high, where you would be in a car, its fine. I use hand sigs anyway.

Thanks to all the responses to my questions about weight/handling and the obstructed plate. Also thanks for the link to the earlier discussion back in October 2010. I guess I had missed that one. Certainly seems a great place to haul something light, yet bulky. Also, I like the idea of hauling the spare gas back there. Unless if someone runs into the back of you (but then you'd have other probs). Shocked

20x36?!?  That's huge.

That's gotta be heavy....and with it packed, I'd imagine too heavy.

If you need that much room, why not consider something like the Third Wheel trailer.....

http://www.thirdwheeltrailers.com/index.php/home

or a Uni-Go trailer.  You've already got a hitch.

It is heavy...about 35 pounds.......

I'm rethinking it.   Packed up will put on some weight, but not as much as some passengers!

However, would the weight be too much on the hitch itself??   The hitch is only mounted with 4 bolts.  How much weight can it hold??

I originally wanted to go with a basket as I've towed a trailer before and the MPG dropped from 34 to about 20!!  (that was with a 1500 Vulcan).

But from what I've read here, most people claim that towing a trailer (I have the HF) only drops them down a few MPG"s.   I average about 34 one up, and if it drops to 30, that's is fine.  But 20 just sucked!!

Wondering what to do!!
