I was bending over to spread some pinestraw in a shrub bed this morning, and I tweaked my back in one certain spot on the back of my belt line(it was 22 degrees when we started work)......I worked around the pain the rest of the day then stopped and got a Thermocare lower back heat strip on the way home..... I put it on and walked 4.16 miles in 1Hr. and 15 mins.....the heat feels good, but I can feel some "burn" in the calves and back of my legs now......just turned 42 on Saturday the 11th (this past weekend) and am already falling apart..... ......I have to get back on my walking regimen and lose some more weight.....I took the Holidays off and gained a few lbs back--- I'm sure...... .......Oh well, I know what I have to do to get it back off again......

Right now stop what you are doing, fill a bag with ice and put it on the muscle that is hurting.
Heat will only make it worse right now.
ICE
ICE
Walgreens sells a bag you can freeze and refreeze for 17 bucks and it has a strap that will even reach around my belley.

I have alternated between heat and cold before.......the heat loosened the muscles up.....feels good....another problem I have in the winter is making myself drink enough water to stay hydrated....just breathing in and out on a cold dry day can pull moisture out of the body.....

The walk with the heat pad on my back seems to have helped.......the last time my back went "completely" out was January of 2006.....it took me a week to be able to stand up straight......all those times I carried 120-150lb crossties on my shoulder in my 20's-30's finally caught up to me......I wasn't even lifting anything heavy that time......

The Dr. gave me a sheet with back stretches on it.....they do help.....the older I get, the more I'm going to have to stretch, be careful not to go too long between meals, make sure I drink enough water......getting older sucks!!......

Keep up the excercises and try to remember what you may have done to pull that muscle. Always remember to bend your knees and stoop, even if you are going to spread pine straw. The worst pain I've ever felt in the lower back was from sitting in a chair and bending over to tie my shoes. Pulled a muscle deep in the lower back, was in Flint, Michigan visiting the In-laws, had to drive back to Texas with that.

Wuss! Just kiddin Stan, just don't do what you did again, the weight loss will help, I dropped 25 lbs after I retired down to 165, and I work physically alot, and I'm old enough to be on social security and I feel great. I take glucosamine daily, supposedly helps your bone structure. An Aleeve in the morning don't hurt, either. Hoser

Well bugger I forgot we share a birthday. Happy Birthday Stanley. Even though I've lifted weights for over 44 years I too can tweak my back doing silly things like tying shoes etc etc. I find wearing my weight belt post tweak helps. It has a pad that fits right into the small of the back . A bag of frozen peas works well and use this is in conjunction with a heat pad. Varying the temp helps bring blood to the area as the veins and capilliaries contract and expand. Yep, Aleve is your friend. A lot of the other OTC pain pills will mess yer stomach up.

A spring chicken , I turn 68 Thursday, started doing 3 to 4 miles on a tread mill every other day, and aerobics 3 times a week, feel like I am 15 years younger . Gets rid of the lbs also.

Happy Birthday Steamer and Britman!
In two months I'll be double your age Steamer!.
I've had back problems too but not since surgery. I've found that cold packs are the best, heat wll make things worse generally. Cold plus exercise, stretching, lifting moderate weights, walking, etc, all help to keep the back in better shape. Losing weight is good but harder to do. I'm at 225 not bad but not good either.
Paul, I've wondered how you can ride off road, now I know. Keep it up!

I like the part of this story where you moved a crete myrtle last week without hurting yourself but this week the pine needles got ya. Senseless act of aging. It seems like it is the odd little things that hurt sometime.

Use ice only 15 minutes at a time. But helps pulled muscles better than heat.

I think that project was the precursor to this back strain....we did man handle that thing around some last week to get it plumb.....
