I found a black 2001 Valkyrie standard with less than 5k miles. It is equipp,ed with cobra 6 pipes, windshield, leather bags and floorboards front and rear. The dealer is asking over 8k but I think it could be bought for 8k out the door. Is this a decent price for a low milage standard? He also said that a warranty was available for $400 first year, I'm not sure if it's Honda or aftermarket, are they a good idea or not neccessary? I haven't bought a bike in 30 years except in my dreams. Now I'm hoping to wake up and have a little fun not another nightmare!
Thanks for your opinions.

Thats kind of high in my opinion.  I know others will also tell you to be careful with a bike with that low of mileage.  Not always a plus.  Either get him down a good amount more or find one with 15-30k miles for about $6k.  Higher mileage is not an issue with these bikes.

Tell the dealer you will give him $4,785 out the door with all the taxes and license included.  In other words, on the road for $4,785.

If he comes down to $5,200 out the door, jump on it.

5000.00 to 5500.00 would be about market for that bike I'd think.  Eight grand should get you a nice Insterstate.  That's way to high for a standard.

+1 cooldude Almost two years ago, I bought an '01 IS with around 9,000 miles for $6,300.00. I know it was a great price, but... they are out there and this Std. is too much.

Check it out on NADA OR Kelley Blue Book then take the printout to the dealer and see what he will do.  He didn't pay anywhere near that $8K for the bike; he is using those same books to beat some customer down on the trade-in.  The low mileage is nice unless the bike has been sitting storage for years without proper mothballing.  Some things to ask about - - tires, coolant, oil, carbs synced, brake fluid, final drive fluid, etc.

I know one dealer explained to me that they priced the used bikes at twice what they gave for them as trade-ins.  On top of the trade-in cost they had the service costs to get the bike ready to resell.

That might give some idea of what the dealer has in the bike ........

I know a bike is worth that what you are willing to pay for it, but I agree with the people here that is a high price for a standard, even with extra's. If you check KBB you will see that he is overpriced, and I agree with RJ, give him a low ball figure and let him counter the offer.

Everyone is telling you right hairyteeth. That's way to high. I've been running down bike prices for several weeks now and that is crazy high.  I just found an interstate with 13,800 miles on it for a great price, now I just have to check it out, so don't bite that hook at the dealers, do what they said, pay about $5K for it.

I bought my 99 Interstate for 3 thousand dollars a couple of years ago. It had 82,000 miles on the clock but I wasn't scared of the miles. I expect to get many more years and miles out of that bike. Look around and be patient. There are good deals out there to be had.    cooldude

I would be very wary on a bike with only 5k...it could be 105k.  In which case, it is way over priced even though that is a drop in the bucket for mileage for these bikes.

You did ask about extended warranty service...in my opinion a waste of money, however if you are not comfortable doing your own maintenance, and have no history on a bike or car you are thinking of purchasing, maybe...those contracts are written with numerous loop holes by lawyers with the intent of making the company money and they do, they do, they do.
I agree with the others here,,,too much moo-la for a std..unless you wanna buy mine, hehe..

My 2003 Standard with under 20000 miles on it went for 5600 from a dealer. That was with Memphis Shades batwing, radio, Edge bags, polished wheels and the transmisson chrome add ons as well as numerous other chrome goodies. I agree, priced to high.

Got a 99I/S with 36000+ miles for $5800.00 in June of 2010. I have not looked back and don't regret the purchase at all. Found mine at a used car dealership about 125 miles from the house. Bargains are still out there. Lowball the dealer and see what his reaction is. B T W-the I/S i bought-they were "asking" $7250.00 for. And if it's been sitting awhile they might be ready to entertain offers. See also if they can certify the mileage. Let us know how goes it please. RIDE SAFE.

Almost new 11year old bike update!
I went to the dealership today to see the (black/silver) 2001 Valk standard in the sunshine. I was also allowed to take it for a test ride (my first on a Valkyrie). Despite the temperature barely above freezing and winds gusting 15-20 from the north I had a great time(next time I'm wearing gloves). The only problem I had was raising both legs up to the floorboards(need to get my legs into shape to ride this bike). I also thought the heel toe shifter was pretty sloppy as it was made to just fit over and actuate the original shift lever. The bike itself is very clean and represents it's low mileage(under 3500). Tires I am told are original Dunlops and while adequate tread remains and they are not cupped or worn funny there is some weather checking from 11 plus years of age. I talked to the mechanic that serviced it and he said previous owner drove it 500 miles in the last 4 years, because that was when it was in last for a carb clean and sync. I suppose this machine sold for over 10k but they are still asking over 8k and want just over $500 for a set of new Metzlers. Lower offers fell on deaf ears, so for now my search goes on.
If anyone is interested I have the salesman's number.
Thanks Hairy

That's not a dealer, that's a stealer.  Without knowing anything other than your description of the bike, and assuming that I'd be interested in it, I'd offer 5500 with the dealer throwing in a new set of tires before I'd walk out the door with it.

He wants waaaaaaay to much for it and he wants to rip you off for a set of tires too.  Give him your number and tell him to call you when he sobers up and keep looking.  There are much, much better deals out there.

If your selling it, that's a nice price. If your buying it, not so much.
I've seen standards sell for $3,800 with under 10k on the clock here. I've seen Tourers selling between $5000-$6000 here.
Heck, mines for sale on Craigslist, I've put over $8k in it, after the purchase price of $7,500 I'm only asking $8000 for the bike and all the goodies. I think it's a great deal considering most of the accessories I've added are not available anymore, or have doubled in price. If parted, you could more than double your money. I have not had a single call in 6 months uglystupid2
I'll be keeping it because obviously buyers don't agree with me and I won't sell for less.
Back to you...If thats the one and you have to have it, his price is too high. Can you verify the milage, sounds a little low? Can you verify that the clock hasn't turned over already? I agree, should still have the stock Dunlops on it and will have flat spots from sitting and should be dry rotted. It will certainly need new valve stems and carb. work, unless the dealer did the carb. work in preperation for a sale. Milage would not scare me in the least with a well maintained Valkyrie. I would think a better price could be had in any part of the country.  Take your time and keep looking, If he won't budge on his price, it will still be there. If you could get that for $5500-$6000 and he puts some new rubber on it, now that's a good deal cooldude
