took this pic in death valley

thought it was just a lizard

pictures of gila monsters i saw are black and orange

now someone told me it is a gila monster

anyone ?

That is definitely not a Gila Monster.  It is a Long-nosed Leopard Lizard.

i dont think its either one

the long nose is about 6 inches. this was close to 12-18

pattern is different also

12-18" for just the body or total length?  The reason being, the leopard lizards body is 5-6", but the tail is another 6-8".  Lots of variability in patterns as well.  The pattern on the tail would be more telling.

i would say about 18 total

it just looks thicker and heavyer than a leopard lizard

i will ask park rangers when i get there in may

Let us know what you find out.  I was wondering about it as well - the body looked heavier like a desert iguana, but its not a desert iguana.  It hard to get perspective in one picture.

upon further reshearch...

i would say it is a long nose leopard lizard .... probably

i saw more pictures of them with verry simaler pattern and shape, however i would have to say this was a BIG ASS specimen

picture was taken the the eureka mine site in death valley

in may i will be back in the area and will ask the park rangers

will repost my findings

It is NO way  a Gila Monster ...

It's a Leopard Lizard...
100% sure of this..

There are a few colour combos..
 




This is a Cali. leopard lizard..
