Non Valk Question: Etching Galvanized Steel
«

Hi!
I have use a piece of perforated galvanized steel to build a radiator cover for my old Suzuki. I wish to paint it black, but am wondering what to use as etching product, followed by a primer before the paint.
Any insight would be appreciated!

Well according to my Jr. High School metal shop teacher vinegar will etch galvanized sheet metal for painting. I would say a mild acid such as muriatic would do the job quicker.

I have read both as well, vinegar to etch for painting, or a VERY weak muriatic solution. I know straight muriatic will remove the galvanizing fairly quickly, I use it by dipping the end of something to be welded. The galvanized in straight acid looks like an Alka-seltzer in water...

You could buy a spray can of self etching primer, about 8 bucks.

Being a painting contractor for 35 years, my men used vinegar on galv ductwork and gutters, with great success..........

I have purchased some, but am not sure that it can take the heat (valve covers, crankcase covers, etc.).

Cool! What do you use after the vinegar to wash it before applying primer, etc.

We left it as it was, but after it dries, you could wash it with water & dry.
