I pulled out in front of a car once because I didn't see it. There was no earthly reason for me not to see it, there were no obstructions between me and it. But I didn't see it until the screeching brakes made me look in my rear view mirror. Fortunately, the guy was on his toes and able to avoid a collision. I reflected on this incident the rest of the day and wondered if I was loosing my mind. It was a wide open intersection, it was a bright sunny day, visibility was perfect, and yet I didn't see it.

Has anyone noticed that if you continuously move your eyes ever so slightly then the dots remain? I'm going to try doing this more on the road when at intersections and such.
I imagine that fatigue really amplifies the tendency to zero in on a target point.

Very interesting. Cover the green dot with your finger . . . the yellow ones do not disappear. I can see where "we" could get lost in the crowd, depending on what other drivers are focused on.

Try rapidly scanning all 3 yellows (do not focus on one very long )while covering the green dot.

As part of our driver training at work the company uses the Smith System. one of their tips/sayings is "Keep your eyes moving". This is exactly for what this demo shows you. I never had any of the dots disappear.

Seems like if the green dot moved a little left and a little right, you'd be more likely to always see the yelloww dots. I read a study that showed people get so used to seeing something in one place that they then cease to see it-like a bike in front of them or coming toward them. Frequenty moving from one side of your lane to the other continually puts something "new" in front of a driver and makes you much more likely to be seen. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
