Slept on a Tempurpedic at my BILs, it was OK, have slept on several air mattresses but can't say they were the version you're looking at. Was not impressed with air but, it beats the hell out of the ground or a floor. Different folks like different things. My wife loves a matress with lots of softness, me, not so much. Some places will let you try a bed of thirty days, I'd do that before I bought. But, there is a disqualifier for returning a mattress, there can be absolutely no stains. So use a mattress cover.

I've had one of those gimmicky air mattresses for over 10 years. I wish I had never bought it. I particularly wish I had returned it during whatever trial period it had at the time. I suppose it's ok but I've had better mattresses. Maybe other people are different but, to me, it's a gimmick because after you get used to it and get tired of playing with it you leave it at the same setting all the time. I don't remember my wife ever changing the setting on her side since about the 2nd or 3rd week we had it. The thing is about the same as sleeping on any blow-up air mattress like you would take camping. Just way the heck more expensive! My side developed a leak in the mattress about 3 or 4 years ago, loses all the air during the night, and has to be pumped back up every night before I go to bed. (Yeah, I know) Anyway, if and when I get around to replacing it I'll get a regular mattress.

We have a sleep number bed... it has been great for us, it is the only bed we have had that both me and Shay have both liked, she likes her side about 35 and i run about 60, and so far we have not had any problems... This bed is about 6 years old, and we have had it about 3 years.
My parents bought it and after dad passed, mom wanted a regular bed again, so she gave it to us, so i did not purchase it, but it has been a great bed for us.

We did the 30 day trial on the sleep number 6 years ago, thought it was noisy and too hard to get out of. Went to a hotel to try out the tempurpedic, and didn't like the way we sank down into it. Goodluck

Had a Comfortaire for about five years. Wife and I both liked it. After four years my side developed a leak and they sent me a new pump for free. All I had to do was send back the old one.

Did the sleep number thing for 6 weeks, worse than the one I was replaced, bought the temperpeadic and have never slept better...if you have the $$$ pull the trigger...I think you will be as happy as I / we have been over the past 2 years.

Larry and I have had the Temperpedic for about 5 months. We love it. Tip: I bought regular sheets with deep pockets, 16 inches I think, instead of buying their sheets for $200. Measure the side of the mattress and go from that.

We have had a Tempurpedic for 9 years now,,,, we both love it. Got it a year before my spine surgery (L5/S1 fusion) to help wiht my back pain,,, it helped and we still find it very comfortable.
EDIT (to add): After 9 years no noticeable permanent impressions. That is expected on my wife's side as she is tiny and lightweight. My side on the other hand has a tall heavy behemoth sleeping on it (6'5" 300LBS), and my side is the same as her’s. Granted we do rotate (not flip- we keep same side up) the mattress 180 degrees once a year.

I like our Sleep Number because we can change the softness. Most of the time I set it at 50 but sometimes I bump it up higher. Had it for about 8 month.
Had the foam type before that for about 10 years. It was ok at first then it started to develope divits where we lay. With the Sleep number just put more air in and the divits go away.
I just pray for no leaks.

Got a Temperpedic from Mattress Firm to replace a Sterns & Foster pillowtop. After 3 months, felt like we had given it a chance to break in but it was leaving us feeling like we were being beaten. Sore every morning. Sent it back and got a super soft plush top as a replacement and never looked back. After trips, we are so happy to get back to our own bed.
Never slept on the sleep number mattress, but did help my sister-in-law set one up. Had to open it up to get the airbags placed correctly. I think that you could get one of those temporary air mattresses and put a 3" memory foam mattress on top and get the same effect.

Same here. Another problem we had with the temperpedic was it was HOT and after about 15 minutes you were in a crater that formed around your body and if you wanted to roll over you had to dig your way out. This all started for us because I have lower back problems and the Doc said it's probably our bed. Being a "cheap bohemian" we first tried a cheap sleep # bed and it was sh!t. As others stated it was a glorified expensive air mattress. Then we tried the temperpedic and had those issues. We then went back (after trying other "normal" mattresses) to the sleep number and got a more expensive one with the pillowtop. This has been probably 5 yrs now and it is by far the best one we've had. After reading all these comments looks like you're no closer to an opinion on which is better! I guess it's a "to each his own". Good luck!!

We went from a water bed to a Sleep Number Bed 10 years ago...loved it! Now, 10 years later, I was not so comfy on it, the sides had broken down and I was rolling to the middle and we had some mold between the air mattress and the top pad. The bed has a 20 year warranty so I called to see what they could do. Customer service was very nice and they sent us everything except the pump under the bed...YES they replaced the whole upper mattress, after 10 years! Now I am back to being comfy again. Yes I would buy a Sleep Number Bed again. Highly recommend one!!

Hubby has REALLY bad back issues and we got a Spring Air set from Costco that is the really thick laytex and I got him a pillow there. The pillow is very dense memory foam, but I think it is chopped up. He also uses a knee pillow. If he sleeps on his semi hard pillow and uses the knee pillow his back doesn't give him issues.
We did the air bed and I loved it and he didn't.
Good luck, you just have to keep trying till you find what works for you.

Been on both and the Temperpedic was just too hot..... sent it back....
Liked the air one- tried it at a hotel... might be the next one- but it seemed like a hammock...
regular mattress now with foam top..... Ikea.... best so far for me- I do have back and neck issues
Best sleep is with an Aleve or 2..... with a Makers chaser.

I am stuck in the 80's also. Full wave, water bed for me the last 30 years. Went with a pillow top for 6 months about 5 years ago. Just to give that a try. That was a expensive test. But I don't think I will be giving up the waterbed any time soon this time...

WE have had a slepp number for over 10 years and I'd buy another although their prices have gone crazy. We bought the cheaper standard "classic" and added our own topper for more comfort. Oss, my brother has a somma and it's the best bed I've ever slept on when visiting anywhere as overnight guest. Told him I want it if ever gets rid of it.

I'd prefer a water bed too.
I like the cool me off factor. Unfortunately, I have a wife... who's ALWAYS cold, and for it to be warm enough not to KILL her it BOILS me.
We tried all kinds of ways to insulate her from the bed without success.

Been on a waterbed for 25 years. We have one with foam sides so you can sit on it and put your shoes (hose) on and not fall off the bed. The last one we had was one with all of the drawers under it and it was just too tall. This one fits on a beefed up bed frame and uses standard waterbed sheets. Yes, cooling off in the hot South Texas summers is a major plus. Hay Jimmyt

I don't know what the best mattress is. We've slept on so many different ones - waterbeds, temperpedics- foam mattresses - spring mattresses - even old hay filled ones back in the old country. They all seemed to be OK once you go used to them. The one thing I do know is that one of those 2 inch foam overlays makes them all sleep OK. That's what we have in our house on our beds and in the RV.

i've had a temperpedic clone for 8 yrs, and i liked it at 1st but it was HOT, and i would still have shoulder pain (i got the bad after back surgery) then it started to sag in the middle and everytime you'd get in to bed you would roll to the middle. my wife had an sleep no. bed (before it was called that, the remote has a up/down air adjustment, but no number) and it was ok, but still not perfect. now i have a temperpedic 3" top cover on the air bed, very nice!
