Had a buddy call me today asking about the alternator.....I "pro-actively" replaced mine with Hubcaps help with one from MARS....it made a whirring noise from day one, but is charging fine.....going to get my old one rebuilt locally I think....

I was googling Valk Alternators and found this link....says it's NEW?....

Stanley, they are new and expensive. EMS Global also makes one or imports one from Japan, and you can get one from Pat's Small Engine or equipment Parts, I think. The GL1500 Goldwing alternator is pretty cheap from Pats, but the parts guy said they are from China.
EMS Global says theirs is OEM not aftermarket, and the Goldwing version is a bit cheaper, just needs to be clocked for the Valkyrie. I'm still bumping my head on which one to go with. I have a Tourer to ride, so am in no hurry. The rebuilt one I purchased October of 2010 crapped out this past January, so the next one will be new.

I was NOT thrilled (when after a real PIA change out) the newly rebuilt one made a whirring noise...... Angry Angry Angry

I was told......"Sometimes the air diverter inside bends a little, it is very close tolerance and it makes contact with the cooling fan blades, it will wear down. No serious problem."

It still makes that noise... tickedoff

I got the 85 amp. Hitachi  off E-Bay for $190.00 plus 20 shipping. So far it charges great and makes no more noise then my old one which I plan on having rebuilt to 85 amps.

I had to replace the alternator on my '97 Valk a few years ago. I bought the 1500 Gold Wing alt. Cheaper and all ya need to do is take the three case bolts out and index it one bolt hole. Worked for me !!

My rebuilt from MARS whirs, but it works fine. The noise doesn't really bother me, but it doesn't give me confidence, either. I'm going to buy a spare to carry with me on trips this summer.

If MARS knows about the whine, why don't they do something about it? Or is it just some and not all? I would appreciate an honest answer.

While it may be more expensive, I'd rather go this route than a rebuilt that whines.  It just not woth the constant concern/worry and wondering.   Put the new one in, have your old one rebuilt at a reliabe shop and ride on with life.  I've not changed out the alternator on a Valk yet but, I am not really looking forward to it either.

I tried this at a local shop. They said they weren't able to get parts for them. Who rebuilds them??

They would not be that hard to rebuild yourself, just clean it up and replace the brushes and bearings.but if your having it rewound then you have to take it to a pro.

Just talked to a rep at EMS Global, told me the Goldwing and Valkyrie alternators are the same, just difference in price and both made by Hitachi, not an aftermarket. Of course, there is the clocking that has to be done for the Valkyrie and vice versa for the wing. The LR140-708C, $228.00.

I just talked to a local place here in Alb and just asked Questions. Mine is still going good.

He said he could rebuild mine for $60 to $100. I also asked if mine went out if he could rebuild it to put out more juice. They can. I asked if I needed a heavier duty battery and he said no. HMMMMM ???  I told him I took the cover off every so often and blew compressed air in it to clean out all the dust and dirt. He said it was a good idea. That makes it run cooler. Heat is what kills them.

Hopefully mine lasts forever and I will never have to find out. cooldude

My old alternator was still working fine at around 75K.....but I thought I could hear a faint noise as though a bearing might be going out....hate that the rebuilt one makes this noise.....I would think that anything touching in there would generate heat which probably isn't good either..... Undecided

Way back when, just out of high school I used to rebuild starters and alternators/generators. So I know a little bit about them.  The brushes rubbing the commutator wear and the dust coats things. That insulates it and holds in heat. You need to undercut the mica as the commutator wears down. That too helps with temperature.

But that was many years ago. My rememberer doesnt work as good anymore.
