hi dragon riders.
just got a used final drive  and shaft. question is can i put diesel fuel inside to soak and clean the old oil. is there and parts on or in the final drive that would get hurt by diesel fuel.

Just be sure to get the cleaning fluid all out so as to not dilute the new lubrication.

I really don't see a need, to do what you suggest.  It, may have unforeseen consequences.

Simply letting the thing drain for a few days in a warm environment would be all that I think is necessary.

The whole unit runs pretty cleanly and new lubricant is all I see, as being needed.

just flush with final drive gear oil. type that will be used for your final fill.

is this because u see dark gray fluid?  that is the moly used with the factory fill. moly is dark gray.

Thank you gentlemen for your help.
The final drive is for spare parts. Hope I never need to use it.
I just want to clean it out really well and wrap it in oilcloth for storage.
Without this forum I wouldn't have had the confidence to do all this stuff.
I de-smogged, changed tires, learned maintenance and collecting parts for the future.
Future darkside in progress...

bare metal with no oil film will rust, seals will dry out. I would overfill it before storing it.

If all you want to do is protect it for storage, I think any oil would work, I would use motor oil, cheap. Just like mentioned, let it drain for a few days before putting the proper oil back in, and maybe do an early oil change after it's been in use.

If it's functional, it would be best to keep it whole, and swap it out when you need it.
