I parked my 98 Standard in the shed for the last 3 months due to winter temperatures. This weekend I pulled her out, washed her, replaced the battery, changed the oil and checked the tires out. When I cranked her over the starter hung several times. Like it was stuck and could'nt turn over. There was an audible clunk at the starter and I heard the starter relay click. I have 12.78 volts in the brand new battery. I tried to start it again today but had the same result. Any idea as to the problem? My daughter wants to go for a ride.

Search "hydro-lock" for the most probable cause. DO NOT touch your start button until you've investigated if your bike has experienced hydro-lock.

Pull the spark plugs . . . then try it again. Might be the dreaded hydro lock. If there is fuel in a cylinder it will blow it out with plugs removed, so maybe pull outside in the drive way -- away from a source of ignition.

If it is hydrolock, and that clunk he heard was the parts breaking away, would the starter spin freely without engaging the flywheel, or would it be locked up?
OP, like the others said, don't try and start it again until you check for hydrolock.

Pull your plugs and retry hitting the starter button and hope it turns over.If it was hydro locked and nothing broke it will turn over very fast.Chances are it may have just locked up and nothing broke.

The left rear cylinder was full of fuel. I removed that plug and the one next to it and hit the starter switch. I blew fuel a good 12 feet. I did it again and put the plugs back in. She's running good. I am going to replace the plugs to make sure that she runs well. Thank you all.

Need to fix your petcock and that carb needle valve too. Either should have prevented the problem.

You got very lucky. Do what the guys are saying or it will happen again, and might cost a whole bunch to have fixed.

Clogged jets, leaking float valves, malfunctioning fuel delivery system.
All symptoms of incomplete knowledge regarding ethanol enriched gasoline and improper storage preparation.
Of course, the worst outcome is hydrolock of the motor. The final proof!
Education is the best insurance against hydrolock.
