Anchor suspended for calling Danica Patrick

What does she expect. If she didn't strut her stuff around half naked she may have grounds to stand on. But then again if she was just another dude breaking into NASCAR she most likely would not have the oppurtunites that she has. Nobody would have noticed her from her driving skills.



She makes her living marketing herself like this, and then gets upset with people calling her for what she is selling.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego TV sports anchor has been suspended for implying a sexist slur when talking about race car driver Danica Patrick.

Fox 5 San Diego tweeted late Tuesday that Ross Shimabuku has been suspended without pay for a week for his comments about Patrick before her Sprint Cup debut in the Daytona 500.

The anchor stopped just short of calling Patrick a derogatory name on the air after the NASCAR driver complained the media always describe female athletes like her as "sexy."

When the broadcast returned to Shimabuku, he responded by saying: "Oh, I've got a few words . Starts with a `B', and it's not `beautiful.' "

Shimabuku has since apologized. He joined the station in 2009.

Rush Limbaugh called the woman who was denied the right to speak at a controversial contraception hearing a "slut" on Wednesday.

Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown Law School, was supposed to be the Democratic witness at a Congressional hearing about the Obama administration's contraception policy. However, Darrell Issa, the committee chair at the hearing, prevented her from speaking, while only allowing a series of men to testify about the policy. Fluke eventually spoke to a Democratic hearing, and talked about the need for birth control for both reproductive and broader medical reasons. She mentioned in particular a friend of hers who needed contraception to prevent the growth of cysts.

Can you imagine if you were her parents how proud...you would be?" he said. "Your daughter ... testifies she's having so much sex she can't afford her own birth control pills and she wants President Obama to provide them, or the Pope.

What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex -- what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex.

How the right wing extremists can continue to support this worthless bugger is beyond me.

But, you're right.  If Danica didn't market herself as a sex symbol, she wouldn't be where she's at.   Her driving skills are average at best for a NASCAR driver.  Based on her record, she's lucky she still has a ride and it's not her driving skills that are keeping her in that car.   She brings attention to NASCAR which equates directly to dollars.  It ain't about racing, it's all about the dollars.  I'm not a Danica hater, actually think she is pretty sexy but complaining about what she's made herself into is kind of silly IMO.

The only thing I don't understand is a few weeks ago South Park had an episode about NASCAR, and I believe Danica Patrick was called a B*itch by Eric Cartman. Although very entertaining, didn't seem as if Danica had a problem with being on South Park, or maybe she hasn't seen the episode yet?

The South Park episode was great. But remember that the Cartman character represents the worst in Americans; ignorance, sloth, laziness. When Cartman makes fun of something on the show the writers are supporting that thing in an underhanded way. Cartman is funny, but no one to emulate. If it's Stan or Kyle on the other hand then the target is real.

I don't think she was upset at all. I'm reiterating that she made the statement about describing female athletes all to be sexy, and wished to have another word to describe her. Being called a dumb bitch on South Park obviously doesn't bother her. So I don't find it necessary for a TV anchor to be ridiculed for making a similar comment. I guess that's the difference between a news anchor and South Park. If she doesn't intend on being called sexy, does she rather like being called bitch instead? I'm sure everyone understands Cartman on the show. I love watching South Park,  but its still television. That's all I'm implying.

Well I'd agree. It's just that South Park is parody and satire. Studio anchors are supposed to be (relatively) impartial messengers. I think that's where the flap is coming from. There IS a different standard for the two.
