I have a 2000 Standard and am trying to remove the rear footpegs to install floorboards for my wife.
It looks like there is a nut on the back of the mounting plate but upon close examination I see the "nut" is not threaded...at least there are not threads visible from the inside of the nut.
I used a box wrench (cannot get a socket on it) and even hit it repeatedly with a hammer, not go.  Put a monkey wrench on the mounting peg itself and it turn microscopically.  The only way it will turn is to the right...so I think I'm tightening it!  The is a small retaining pin mounted on the bracket to keep the peg from moving to the left.  These bad boys aren't left hand thread are they?
Any tips on how to remove the peg mounts would be appreciated.

Best I remember is that you need to attack the nut from the backside. Perhaps some pb blaster to free it up. Mine were torqued very, very tight. It's not left-hand thread.

I had the same problem as well. They're just TIGHT! Keep working at it and they'll come eventually.

It's a bolt run in from the backside and they are tough to break loose because it is hard to get good wrench access to it.

DON'T  work from the front.  There is a small boss that sticks out to keep the peg mount from turning.  Until you loosen enough from the back to clear this, you'll either get nowhere or perhaps shear it off.

Don't take the post off. Just remove the peg at the joint and get an adaptor for the floorboard to attach there. Gives her more room and allows the board to fold up.   cooldude

Okay.  Thanks.  I thought I was doing something wrong when it was so hard to loosen the nut...hard to get good torque on a wrench at that angle.
I like leaving them and adapting to the peg bracket.

It's as stated...a bolt from the back. That's also the plate that doubles as the exhaust hanger and I had to remove that hanger and use a rattle gun on the bolt.

I believe they also have red locktite (or equivalent) from the factory.  They didn't want these working loose for obvious reasons.  The awkward position and the limited area for getting a wrench in there compounds the problem of removing the pegs while the bracket is on the bike.

The best way I found was to remove the whole bracket from the bike, put the bracket in a vice, and use an air impact wrench to break it loose.  If memory serves me, just remove the rear exhaust nuts and the visible bolts and it can be easily removed for this job.

Good luck.
