Wonder why they couldn't do this by helicopter and a drop line? Climbing seems to be a very dangerous option. I don't care what the pay, I would have to say thanks, but I believe I will pass!

I've seen it before, but I watched it again just because I'm a glutton for punishment.

If you enjoyed that you might like watching this line walker.  It's an HD version , so kick it to full screen.

my brother and i climed a microwave tower in Jim Falls Wisconsin once, we were young, no way in the world could do it now (harder to carry the extra 70#'s) i would guess it's about 300' high, don't know for sure, just know that i froze about half way up, there's a saying, never look down, well i did!!  had to stop, catch my nerve, then continued to the top.  had to keep going, had to pee something awful!!   Roll Eyes

if you watch that video, pay attention to how many times he's NOT hooked up with the safety harness!!

I was out here one day and saw them doing the helicopter thing on the powerline.
I took a picture, but it was just a picture of some far-off powerlines with
a barely discernible dot hovering nearby...

Shocked Shocked I do commercial window cleaning and people always ask. "How high have you gone, ever done any highrise windows" Myself, I've never gone over the side of a building higher then 10 stories and they say anything over 3 and falling gets the same result regardless of the height. I don't do highrise windows anymore, but don't have a problem with heights or I should say I didn't until I saw this. Going over the side of a building and sitting on a little board and swinging around doing windows, just doesn't seem all that daring anymore.  Grin

I watched the helicopter video before I looked at some of the tower climbing video.
I've been climbing five "whole" layers of scaffolding lately, and that's plenty for me  cooldude

These guys who climb cliffs solo with no ropes seem like a whole level beyond even
the ladder climber in the video...

I was ok with that climb,  then he went outside the tower, for the free climb.  I will wait for him on the inside part of the tower.  Then he had to go and stand on the very top,  NOPE no way.

Our high angle/ rigging instructor at the FD at the mill was from DBI Sala, and did that for 20 years before becoming an instructor. Saw him set up some scenarios on I beams that he could free climb  straight up like a damn monkey. He said the worst is when you get up there and you decide that you have to take a crap, and that 1500 ft is breezy with your pants down...

Even worse would be releaving yourself at the top (emergency scenario here) and watching your "deuce" hit every rung and hand hold on the way down.  You'd want to have on of those crab leg/chicken wing wet naps in the tool bag when you got down.

Climbed all over steel mills for 10 summers (roofs, blast furnaces, elevated gas lines, ore docks, open structural steel, scaffolds and bosuns' chair); 4-500', not 1500', but after 35 feet you're not gonna be right again (or alive) anyway.  Do it every day, and it's just another job.... and it was the cleanest air available in the mill.  Peeing on the (then-new) safety guy was a regular hobby.  It's just a mist by that time, so they always put out their hands and look up for rain.  Simple pleasures for simple minds.  LOL

We went higher, but I never worked the smoke stacks.

This was my first thought. I think you'd have to check many times to be sure you have everything.....
