I am confused about the nut cage modification.  When I cut the cage do I use the same nut?  It doesn't seem like 1/16 of an inch would make any difference.  I am installing a Goodyear Triple Tread Assurance on a 2000 Interstate.  Do I need to do anything else?

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

It doesn't seem like alot till you do it. The cage is of size. Use a nylon lock nut instead of the old nut. It has a better chance of not coming loose. You may have to cut a little off the bolt but I don't recall, its been quite a few years. If you do, put the nut on 1st then cut the bolt. Back the nut off and your good to go.

I removed the old hardware and replaced it with plated fasteners from an automotive shop.
There is not much clearance in the fender, you'll want to create as much as possible for the sake of safety.
Save your old fasteners.

The object of the nut cage modification is to put the bolt through from the inside out and then put a acorn nut on your bolt.

You can also buy a thinner headed bolt if you so desire to gain some more width......

I cut them off, then replaced the original hardware with a carriage type bolt from the local hardware store in stainless steel.  Install it from the inside and buy some stainless hardware, nuts, washers etc. to make it come out to OEM length.  If you have bags, while you are at this, replace the front bolts with studs or bolts with the heads cut off, so you can remove the bags easier, thread pitch is 1.25, hard to find, but keep looking.  I think the carriage bolts I bought were 3/8", and of course buy nuts etc. to match.  Some hardware stores like ACE are carrying some chrome bolts.

I have a trailer hitch on this bike ,I want to have the rear fender so it can be removable for tire changes to make it easier .Do you still insert the bolt from the inside to the outside? Also the fender has a lip on it where they bend it around the edges, this is almost sticking out towards the tire as much as the nut in the cage do you do anything to this or will it not be a factor?
