Avatar meets Lord of the Rings meets Dune  cooldude

Haven't read the books so no preconceptions as to how the movie should look.

Only quibble is they have the Earth and Moon way too big in the Mars sky.

I saw it last night.  I liked it, good action and a decent story line.  The 2.5 hours went by quick.

If given a choice of Mars epics I'd have rather seen a faithful adaptation of The Martian Chronicles. But that's just me.

I think what you're talking about was supposed to be the two moons of Mars.  I don't recall seeing Earth from the Mars landscape at any point in the movie.

That's what I thought as well but when the 2 were standing "having a moment" looking to the heavens and talking about Jasoom it sure looked like Earth / Moon.

Been looking forward to seeing it, thanks for the review. Will probably have to wait for it to come out on DVD though. Paychecks have stopped, disability hasn't started yet and I can't get around much anyway.

As was said, a well done version of The Martian Chronicles would be another good one but probably not a box office sell out.

A well done version of Stranger in a Strange Land would be awesome.  cooldude

The Martian Chronicles Mini series back in the 80' with Rock Hudson was pretty close to the book, but effect sucked... we probably wont see it done again.....

Jasoom is the Barsoomian name for Earth.... Thuria and Cluros were the names for the moons of Mars in the books...

I haven't seen the Movie yet, but it is definitely "Based" on the books... have read all the pre opening info and they basically took parts from mainly the first 2 books and mashed em around.... Lord of the Rings was closer to the books, but they did make alot of changes for the film...

Which is a problem, because the original 'A Princess of Mars" story would work great on film as it sets......., but thats Hollywood.... I own and have read all 11 of the series.....

I might go see it....  if its a rainy day and I cant go riding...lol

Damn I'm a nerd......

It is a very entertaining movie, a keeper that I'll add to my collection as soon as it comes available. Not true to the book but better I think.

That's why I'm thinking that it would be a better project for HBO or even a broadcast network (there's no real objectionable content to edit out with the exception of "Way In The Middle Of The Air" which would be best left out anyway) as a miniseries. The Rock Hudson network miniseries didn't suck because it was faithful to the original but for other reasons, not the least of which being the budget.

I agree and I believe the special effects available today would do a much better job of depicting Bradbury's work.

DOn't know why it hasn't happened, but I think the "Stainless Steel Rat" series of books would be a great basis for several movies....... And now they have the tech to do it cool.... love to see it done by the right people.......

Just one of my favorites........ Might even be good for Bruce Willis...LOL

Until then... I'll just reread the book.....

Well they're making Dan Simmons' Hyperion into a movie so anything's possible.

Me? I'm waiting for Prometheus to come out.
