I was fortunate enough to get to see one up close at Elmdorf AFB in Alaska.  This was back in the late 70s and I got to walk around/under it and lay hands on it.  The trailing edges were rough and stressed from the friction and heat.  I could only marvel and dream what it must be like to fly such a craft.  Even though they are officially retired, they are still in limited use.

I was fortunate enough to be driving past Wright Patterson Airforce the day that the SR-71 was brought there.  I just happened to be on the road to a meeting a few miles from my old employer's headquarters.
I had just turned off Colonel Glenn highway when all of a sudden the highway turned into a parking lot.
It only took a couple of seconds to realize why.  I got out of the car like everyone else and watched a show that few have seen.

This particular day, at that particular moment; one of our SR-71's was about to land at WPAFB for installation into the museum.  The pilot realized that there was a crowd watching...and he did not disappoint.  He came in for his first approach to the runway and pulled the landing gear back up to circle back around.
The second approach was much the same, except this time he really decided to show everyone how quickly this plane could disappear...and that is exactly what it did...in a flash you could not see it.

The third time he landed the plane on the runway and deployed the parachute to bring it to a stop.

I will never forget that unexpected show as long as I live.  I was at the right place at the right time.

The rather new aviation display at Dulles A/P also has one parked there. They're something to behold.

And to think... Ole' Habu was designed with slip sticks and graph paper...

(Designed well before I was born, I might add...)

I used to be OCD about the SR-71 as a kid. In fact, the BBS I ran for the Commodore 64 in the mid 1980's was called "Beale Air Force Base" named after the home base of the Blackbird... At one point I coulda told you the tail number and disposition of all the SR-71's that were (officially) made...

...just imagine what we've got in the air now that we'll be finding out about in 10-20 years... (I hope)

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that.  That's a short hop from Nashville, I don't think my wife has ever seen one.
