Here's a question that I'm reasonably sure that no one has asked before.

Occasionally I need to pick up a box of donuts from a local bakery on my way to work. I cannot simply bungee cord the box to the luggage rack as the bungees will crush the box. I really don't want to fasten a milk crate to the back of the bike either.
What I'm looking for are ideas for a method of temporarily carrying a pastry box one way without permantly mounting a trunk. There has to be a way I haven't thought of yet.
Thanks.

I have a trunk on my Interstate, but, When I rode bikes with no trunk, I have a hard sided canvas bag that I use to carry stuff in. Bungee the handle and the strap on the other end to the bike, and no straps or bungee in the middle. I bought mine at Wally world for a few bucks, and only used it for stuff I couldn't crush. (Bread, donuts, that kind of stuff) Worked good for me! cooldude

RPC (reusable plastic container)  you can get them with sides that fold down flat.  then pop the sides up, put in the goodies, and strap em down!

Donuts have holes. Run bungee cord through holes, hook to cargo rack... and Bob's yer uncle!

Given this some thought.
How about this.
Measure the inside edges of the pastry box.
Cut out strip of heavy cardboard, plastic or thin wafer size wood strip that would be as high as the inside edge of the box.

When you get the box of donuts, slip the strips down the sides (inside) of the box. Thus  Creating a kind of internal skeleton that would keep the box from crushing from the bungee cords. Hopefully the donuts would keep the strips in place during transport.

When its your turn for the donuts, take a couple of the strips with you (they would be disposable like the box) put them in, strap'em down.

Have them put the donuts in a bag, and put them in a saddlebag (carefully).

or

Have the local cops deliver them.

That's a very creative idea. Thanks.
Unfortunately the box is already taped shut when I pick it up at the bakery.
The company I work for gets 1-1/2 dozen donuts/day from this bakery. The donuts are already paid for and packed when we pick them up.

Have them double box it, and use a thin cord bungee net.

Ok, how about this one.

Get a clip board. It should fit in the saddle bag.
When you get the box of donuts, put the donuts on the luggage rack, the clipboard on top of that to spread the force out and bungee cord it to the luggage rack. Like a sandwich with the luggage rack as a slice of bread, the donuts as the filling and the clipboard as the other slice of bread. Simple, use two small bungee cords in a crossing pattern over the top of the clipboard.

The best part is you will always have a clipboard with you. Sometimes they can come in handy.
