I remember quite some time ago some one had posted a tab repair option, looks like its time I need take note.

I just noticed mine was popped open, right side, while I was giving her a bath today.

I had pulled it to reinstall, tab's in place, but it did need the top round grommet replaced. Switched it out since I had plenty as wherever I got them last time they only sold them in a Tupac.

So I pop her in and get all in place but the cover has come away from the center cover tab again!!!!

I pull it off again only to find that the tab, although still in place, is very weak and is working like a sick hinge.

I think the original repair was for tabs that had broken off. Not sure if it makes sense to leave this one in place and strengthen it or break it off cleanly and fabricate something in its place.

Any suggestions on repair would be much appreciated.

Here's a couple shots from the camera phone, sorry about the quality...

There's been good suggestions regarding the use of velcro for things just like you report.  Self stick velcro is very good now and ought to last many, many years.

You could always fork over the $100 and get a new abs cover.

I was ready to toss these covers (the remaining one as one flew off after a Velcro fix) and go to the Corbin’s until another VRCC member said that he had an extra chrome cover and shipped it to me. The cover also had the tab broken off but he had simply drilled a small hole about 1”down and 1” back through the cover and into the plastic mount from the center cover that wraps around. Use the right length screw and cap it with a plastic chrome button available at any hardware store! It looks like it was made that way. I still don’t have another and probably will never order another cover. This fix is quick, looks great and will not come off unless you want it to. I can’t remember who to give credit to, so I will just post this for anyone who cusses out those $%%%*& broken tabs! tickedoff

Cover fixed!

PlasticWeld  is available at Wally World near the paint department or ABS Weld is also available, but I like to use the PlasticWeld because the ABS can warp the plastic if you use too much. Shocked
Rough the area up a little under the broken area with some sand paper. Use an alcohol swab to clean it off. Use the same type of staple and some Plastic Weld, then take another piece of plastic to use as a patch on the topside. Press together and allow to fully dry.

Since that tab is still hanging on, I would reinforce it with a paper clip and JB Weld on the back side per Ratdogs method.

You might try a product called Plastifix. I repaired the broken tabs on both my side covers with it. So far so good. Check www.PlastiFix.com for information. I don't remember where I got mine from. Good luck.

Thanks to all that posted.

After checking out the link to Ratdogs fix I had picked up some of the supplies suggested at the local hardware joint.

I did pick up a couple of the cable staples but felt that the ones I got were a bit too fat to use. I had a coat hanger wire and paperclip bent to shape as back up and a binder clip wire.

I found some Plastic Welder that I thought I'd try.

The actual tab finally broke off after being handled but I decided to still use it supported by the binder clip wire.

I wasn't thrilled with the finish the plastic weld epoxy left but it seemed to be holding firm so I figure I'll give it a chance to prove itself before cleaning it up and possibly weakening it.

I'll be heading out to the Tucumcari BBQ over the weekend and see how well it holds up. I think it lists as being rated at temps up to 200 deg or so but I'm sure the heat from that motor will far exceed that.

We'll soon see. Thanks again for the good info.

I broke one off last fall and finally fixed it about a month ago.

I had tried Ratdog's fix on another panel and wasn't real happy with my work. In my old age, I don't have much patience anymore.

So this time per Kamikaze, I used velcro on the frame post, another strip on the inside of the panel and slapped em together...

It has with stood a little over the century mark in a head wind.  Don't repeat this to Red or my butt will be in trouble.......  I'm not supposed to be out on MGM as of this writing, and after falling again today, I'll probably be set back another 4 or 5 weeks....

It is 7734 to fall in public and not be able to wiggle your big fat arse off the ground to get up......    A little gal helped me up....  I told her how to do it and up I came, she was shocked that it worked.  Yes, my big fat arse was embarrassed in the deal......  You are like a floppy fish out of water....... Gary and Ratdog...

I found this post and tried using the bulldog paper clip...looks like this is going to work much better than the ugly gaffer's tape I was using.  Thank you for taking the time to post the idea and "how to"!

That one would've been a cinch...

Take a piece of pliable metal and preform it to the contour of the cover and tab (as it comes from the factory)... (one for each leg of the tab)... then, pad the finish side of the cover from scratches as you make your repair.  If you secure it from moving around on you (like, taped to the desktop), then that frees up one of your hands so you can work.  Heat the metal "splints" you just fabbed up and lay 'em in place to melt in and embed.  Cool with some spritz's of water and you're good to go.
