How do I know if my rear bearing is bad. I have a squeak when I ride slow. I have had a squeak for the last 30,000 miles but it is more steady now. It does not change when I use the rear breaks and makes no differance turning right or left. I checked them 8,000 miles ago when I had the rear tire changed and both I and the mechanic thought they are still good. Santa

Best way to check a bearing is pull the wheel, and go from there.

That eliminates the wheel bearing.
You will have to start looking elsewhere.
Maybe the caliper is chattering.
We always put the blue stuff on the back of the pad to make it quit squealing.
I can't think of the name of it and it is at the shop.

When have you looked at the pinion cup Tom ? I've had ( 4 ) left bearing go bad over the 13 years I've had a Valkyrie. I've got the double roll right side mod on the left now and hope my bearing days are behind me.

Found my left rear bearing a bit rough. I changed it. I would have done the mod if I had the cut down spacer, next time. Question, has anyone had the left bearing go bad after the mod?

If so I've not heard of it ....It's rare that the right side goes bad in fact I don't think I've heard of that either.

If it's not your (likely left) bearing, it's almost certainly your brake. They get really cruddy and gummed up and make noises, and it doesn't necessarily mean your pads are shot.

I suggest you look at the vacuum tubing. Many times the vacuum tubing will get a small hole and will make a squeaking sound. Hard to find, easy to fix. ***

Why does everyone think taking the wheel off and playing with the bearing with your finger is the best way to inspect it. Sure if it wont spin smoothly by your finger its REALLY shot and that is a quick easy test for a real bad one. These bearing need to perform under a higher load than you can put on it with a finger.
My experience is the best "test" for a bearing going bad is the lateral movement test of the wheel. Lift the bike and grab the wheel at the bottom and use some force to try to move it laterally (in line with the axle) back and forth. The movement you are looking for is tiny tiny in fact it will be more like a slight sound "tick, tick" than a actual movement you can see. But its undeniable when its there. If there is no lateral movement chances are the bearings are good.
Also when using a finger to turn a wheel bearing, many have thought they discovered a "bad" bearing because it turned roughly. However, what was really hapening was the spacer was interfereing with smooth rotation. Theres not much clearance between the bearings and the spacer so sometings its trickly getting them to rotate without hitting an edge of the spacer......

most likely you have been feeling them try to rotate with the spacer "cocked" enough for it to be rubing on the bearing

I changed mine at 30K, front and back with the tires, wheels were off so rather than take a chance it was worth the price of the bearings. It did seem to reduce some noise in the wheels.

With the wheel off the bike, insert the axle about 1/2 inch into the bearing and apply a bit of side pressure and rotate the axle. Any roughness in the bearing will be amplified, so if the bearing is not silky smooth, it is on its way........you do need to be mindful of the center spacer interfering, but once you have felt a bad bearing this way, it is crystal clear....
Just like gold panning, you wonder if all those little specks are gold until you really find a flake....then it is blatantly obvious!
