We left home at 0630 to head to Indy to work EMS at the track. We got a late start and was really cold this morning. Face masks, long underwear, bandannas on the face, and gauntlet gloves. Yea it was cold and we had a 2 hr ride. A hour later we are 30 miles shy of Indy and Kits cold and wants to stop and get a quick bite and warm up. Now its 10 till 7 and we have 45 miles to go yet by 0830. So I crank it up to 85 all the way to Indy. On 465 we are still throttle steady. And believe it or not we are staying with traffic or slightly ahead. We pass this bridge and in my mirror I see a white car and a shadowy figure standing outside. No problem, by the time he gets off the bridge I'd be gone. Wrong!  Shocked Well I pull over and she is wondering why we are stopping. Then she says 'oh!' she hopes off and I wait. He asked how i was and stuff and had this little box around his neck. Great, I thought I had to blow into another one of these things! Nope, it was 'my clocked speed'. Got me doing 79 mph in a 55!  Grin Whew! I musta slowed down! lol Anyway he wants my ID and stuff. I start off telling him its in the saddle bag and that I am armed and it is also in the bag. No prob he says. I open the lid and he see's it. He was cool about it and let me get my stuff out without having him secure it or anything. Checks the permit and says thx for letting him know. He hates the ones that doesn't let him know! Wonders where we work at since I said we were almost there. Then he proceeds to give me crap about my duty belt with a badge on it. Its a EMS badge and wonders why I had one? Well we wear them?! Then still asks why I had the 'police' belt. I told him I have my mini mag, gloves, leatherman tool, mag light holder, radio holder, and my caribeaners on it. Stays on the waist better then having it all on my regular belt. Keeps my pants up! Then he says he makes a practice of not writing tickets to Emergency personel. I told him do what you have to do. I'm not one to use my status to get out of a ticket. To get into gentalman clubs yes but not a ticket!  Evil He said if your valid I'll send you on your way. I told him I haven't had a ticket since I was 16. Last time i was pulled over was near Sturgis in 02, cause a flipped a u-turn in the street. Never had to give him my licence, he said don't do it again. So anyway he comes back and say becareful cause he don't want to work a accident scene with us in it. Cool! We pulled off and he of coarse followed us a few miles. It is very hard to go 55 mph and be passed! Today was my lucky day. And yeasterday I thought about moving my throttle boss up from 65 to 70. Hmmm...... maybe not yet.

Foul!!! you lucky dog. I'm glad you got by on that one, it would have cost a big nickel no doubt and cut into your Sturgis funds.

Keep it between the ditches because I know you can't keep it under 55.

Hey Fudgie, here is my story on CCW in VA.

A few months after the "shall issue" law is passed here, I have a permit (and pisol) and am pulled over at O'dark thirty going to work.  Hand him my license & reg, he's gone a long time, and when he comes back he is very wary and stands by the passenger door so I have to talk to him over my shouder.  He says he sees I have a CCW (this is where I find out in VA, if you have a CCW, his police computer blinks red (or some kind of indication), and asks if I have a weapon.  I tell him yes, and he yells at me "why didn't you tell me when I first came to the car"  I answer, 'Sir I have read the law and all the rules, and it nowhere tells me I am to announce a permit or weapon when stopped.'  He says 'I know that but we expect you to tell us as a courtesy.'  I say "I can understand that, it makes sence, but I ask you, having just gotten pulled over where I may or may not get a ticket, how do I announce I have a weapon in the car without sounding like a threatening azzhole?'    He doesn't care, I get a ticket.

I work with many VA permit holders, and we have a discussion on this at work.  We decide the best course of action is just to hand over your license, reg, and permit all at the same time and make no statement at all, until asked.  This is the least threatening way to announce you (may be) armed.

Fast forward...two years later I am again pulled over at O'dark thirty going to work, and this time  produce license, reg and permit.  The cop is perterbed with the permit, and asks "why did you give me this?'   I explain, my earlier experience with an officer getting angry cause I didn't tell him up front, that I am just trying to do what I have been told in the past, and that I know of no less threatening way to announce I am armed.

I ask him "don't you guys (county police dept)  have an SOP or something where you always want a permit holder to announce as soon as you approach the car, and he says 'never heard of it.'  I say  'look, I made an officer mad when I didn't announce, and now you are perterbed when I did.  I am just trying to be a good citizen, and anyway, having just got pulled over and hoping to get a break or warning by being the nice law-and-order guy I am, how do I verbally state I have a pistol in the car, and not sound like some kind of threatening azzhole??'  He thinks about this and start laughing, 'I see your point.'  When he comes back to the car, he tells me he appreciates my letting him know I was armed up front, and my humor, and he's not giving me a ticket.   Go figure.

I don't get pulled over or tickets very often, but when I do, I hand over the permit with the license and reg (if I have a pistol, which is 99% of the time).

Since the PDs around here are trying to balance the budget on moving violations, no one gets a walk anymore.  Don't even ask.

How about $98 for an expired safety inspection on the bike.   And where I go there is no inspection of any kind....I pull in, we BS a few minutes, he fills out the paperwork, I go pay the cashier, and the tag goes on.  I could have no horn, no signals, no tail or brake light, no brakes, bald tires, etc.  Course I am quite happy to have no inspection, I have already inspected my bike.

Intersting story. I always planed on giving the permit at the same time as everything else. But since the 2 were side by side I figure I better not go digging around! I did have it on my side but after we stopped i decided to put it in the bag. I keep it in my truck in the door so if I get stopped I'll tell him where its at before I go finding my wallet.

Just in case Ya'll come down Texas way    Wink    ,,,,,,, in our state if you have a CCW and have a handgun in your possession when stopped, you are required by law to produce both your DL and CCW to the officer without being asked if you're carrying.  And when they run your license here, a code "10-44" pops up, indicating your CCW (called CHL in Tx).  At that point they may ask if you're armed.  If you are, but haven't previously produces said CCW, you can expect a very long conversation, not to mention less pleasant consequences.    police    I always present both licenses if stopped, even in my 18 wheeler where I'm not allowed by the company to carry.   On the bike, when I always carry on my person, I've not yet been stopped. (Knock on wood).   angel
